Job summary

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust seeks a Senior Biomedical Scientist with Haematology/Transfusion expertise to lead staff, develop SOPs and ensure data integrity across the Blood Transfusion service.

The role requires HCPC registration, a Specialist Portfolio, and an MSc or HSD in biomedical science, with a minimum of five years post-registration experience. Flexibility for rota patterns and site travel is expected.

Qualifications

  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/Transfusion.
  • MSc, HSD or equivalent in biomedical science with specialist blood transfusion knowledge.
  • Minimum 5 years post-registration experience in a busy pathology laboratory.
  • Experience supervising and training staff.
  • Proficient with SOPs, data management systems and pathology IT.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; able to liaise with clinicians.
  • Able to work flexible rota and travel to sites where required.

Job description

You will assist in the management of the Blood Transfusion service providing expert knowledge in the area, managing staff and training and developing and maintaining SOPs.
We are seeking capable, enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our friendly and dedicated team in the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department within Blood Sciences. This post is based at the Royal Stoke Hospital site, but rotation to the County site can be expected. You must have full HCPC registration for appointment as a Senior Biomedical Scientist along with an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/Transfusion or equivalent and either an MSc, Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent in biomedical science plus additional specialist blood transfusion knowledge.,

  • BSc, Registration and Specialist
  • MSc, HSD or alternative
  • Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
  • Knowledge of relevant laboratory data management systems and policies. Understands the importance of data integrity and confidentiality
  • Evidence of BT specialist knowledge, A minimum of 5 years post-registration practical experience of working in relevant Pathology discipline in a busy laboratory environment.
  • oOne or more sub-specialised analytical or clinical areas
  • oSupervising / managing staff.
  • oTraining a range of 'students' e.g. medical , scientific and support staff
  • oPathology IT systems
  • oWorking with complex and specialist laboratory equipment.
  • oActive liaison with clinicians and healthcare professionals.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
  • oEffectively apply skills and knowledge oWork with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review and
  • oWork within safe systems of work and report any deficiencies in those systems., Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust
  • Experience in presenting data to clinical and scientific audiences in a range of formats.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective Pathology networks with internal and external colleagues., Professional personal presentation and manner.
  • Positive attitude and flexible
  • Must participate in the required rota pattern for the department.
  • Prepared to work flexibly, including participating out of routine hours service arrangements when required to do so.
  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary).
  • Ability and willingness to fulfil the travel requirements of the post if/as relevant - primary place of work as per JD but occasionally may be reasonably asked to work at another site where the Trust has responsibility for Pathology Services.
