Job summary

King’s College Hospital is seeking a Healthcare Assistant (Band 3) to support dialysis patients across its sites. You will work within a nursing team to deliver safe, patient‑centred care, assist with induction and training of trainees, and help maintain infection control standards across all dialysis activities.

You will rotate between main and satellite dialysis units as required, contributing to clinical governance and service delivery while upholding the Trust’s values of caring,

Qualifications

• Safely connect patients to the haemodialysis system after verification by a Registered Nurse.
• Assist in routine care tasks under supervision to support patient safety.
• Carry out monitoring and documentation of clinical observations during dialysis.
• Work within infection control guidelines at all times.

Responsibilities

• Connect patients to haemodialysis systems safely after RN verification.
• Measure and record blood pressure, pulse, weight, temperature and other vitals.
• Cannulate arterial and venous sites of AV fistulas with minimal support.
• Undertake routine monthly blood sampling as directed by a nurse.
• Discontinue haemodialysis safely when treatment ends.
• Dispose of HD circuit lines and decontaminate equipment per guidelines.

Job description

To participate in the delivery of high quality, patient focused clinical care. To support registered healthcare professionals in the provision of a safe and caring environment To work effectively as part of the nursing team Assist in the induction, supervision and training of HCA's band 3 and trainee Dialysis Assistants To uphold a duty of care and clinical governance The post holder may be required to rotate between sites to meet service needs, including rotation between the main site and satellite units where applicable and when required to do so - this may be at short notice,

• Be able to safely and competently connect patients to the haemodialysis system, only after all setting and programming have been verified by a Registered Nurse
• Measure, monitor and record the following, escalating and reporting any abnormalities to the RGN:
  • Blood pressure, pulse, weight pre/post dialysis
  • Temperature
  • Respiratory rate
  • Oxygen saturation levels
  • Blood sugar
  • Vascular access arterial and venous pressure
  • Ongoing monitoring via the EPIC flowsheet
  • Patient environment for risk of falls
  • Document dialysis observations
• Be able to cannulate both arterial and venous sites of mature AV fistulas with minimal or no support as directed by a registered nurse
• Be able to undertake routine and monthly blood sampling as requested by a registered nurse
• Be able to competently and safely discontinue haemodialysis when treatment has been completed
• Be able to safely remove and dispose of AV fistula needles
• Be able to dispose of all HD circuit lines following infection control guidelines
• Be able to decontaminate dialysis equipment following infection control guidelines and document using the HD decontamination checklist.
