Job description

Your newpany: You will be working for a high-profile local government organisation that is aiming to improve the efficiency of its Port Health operations. The organisation manages the Port of Essex and seeks experienced administrators who are looking for a role that offers something different.

Your new role

You will serve as a Port Health Technical Officer, combining administrative duties with practical tasks such as those listed below. Please only apply if you are comfortable with a hands-on role, involving a 60/40 Office to On-Site work ratio.

  1. Email Management: Handling emails, calling containers for examination, making release decisions, and saving relevant information.
  2. Telephone Handling: Managing calls from agents, importers, and other agencies, referring to Port Health Offices or Management as needed.
  3. Manifest Coding: Coding vessel manifests and applying documentary holds.
  4. Transhipment Processing: Managing transhipment release requests with proper documentation.
  5. Declarations Processing: Sending and processing import declarations with supporting documents.
  6. Container Examination: Calling containers for inspection, performing seal checks, and updating databases.
  7. Ship Sanitation Inspections: Assisting with ship sanitation inspections and water sampling.
  8. Routine Boarding: Examining ship paperwork for sanitation compliance.
  9. ID Checks: Performing ID checks on low-risk products and conducting preliminary examinations.
  10. Screening and Checking: Reviewing documentation for various imports under supervision.
  11. Product Sampling: Sampling low-risk fruits and vegetables independently.
  12. Water Sampling: Collecting and submitting water samples for testing.
  13. Project Work: Participating in initiatives to enhance systems and processes.
  14. Health and Safety: Applying health and safety policies.
  15. Equal Opportunity: Promoting equality in the workplace.
  16. Other Duties: Performing additional tasks as assigned.
What you'll need to succeed

Essentials:

  • Administrative and customer service experience
  • IT Skills: ECDL standard, proficient with database applications and MS Office suite (Word, Excel)

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of food control and inspection procedures
  • Document control experience
  • Advisory skills for guidance on food control and import procedures
  • Database skills and IT proficiency
Other Relevant Information
  • Work Hours: Willingness to work outside regular hours with prior notice, on a shift basis from 6am to 10pm.
  • Driving Licence: Must have a full driving licence and own vehicle; the location is not accessible by foot, bicycle, or public transport.
  • Handling food allergens (fish, peanuts, tree nuts).
  • Ability to work in temperature-controlled environments like chillers and freezers.
  • Physical capability to move and lift food products during sampling and inspection.
