Job Summary

The NHS Blood & Transplant Components Development Laboratory is an internationally recognised laboratory performing a wide range of research and development projects to improve the quality and safety of blood components for transfusion. From June 2014, the laboratory will be based at NHSBT-Cambridge, alongside Addenbrooke’s Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The post holder, reporting to a senior laboratory scientist, will perform technical and scientific activities within the laboratory, including preparing reagents and controls, machine calibrations, routine monitoring, stock control, and contributing to laboratory meetings. Good communication skills are essential, as the post holder will support and train less experienced staff.

Main duties of the job
  • Perform scientific and technical activities related to blood and tissue donations.
  • Contribute to the Testing Development Laboratory through evaluation, validation, troubleshooting, equipment management, and housekeeping.
  • Support and train new and less experienced staff.
  • Handle blood samples and operate laboratory equipment.
  • Work variable hours, including weekends and bank holidays, with appropriate notice.
  • Manually handle equipment weighing up to 13 kg, with training.

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with IT tools like Microsoft Office
Qualifications
  • Level 4 qualification (e.g., BTEC, HNC, Foundation Degree) in a relevant science or equivalent experience in manufacturing, logistics, or supply chain environments.
  • Evidence of personal development and willingness for further training.
