Job summary

Emerald Group in the United Kingdom seeks a qualified actuary (or nearly qualified) to join its Special Projects team. The role focuses on defined benefit pensions, buy-in/out, wind-up projects and derisking exercises, delivering robust data and governance work for trustees.

You will handle benefit corrections, pre-deal due diligence, data validation, and client liaison on select projects, while mentoring actuarial students and ensuring accuracy under tight deadlines.

Qualifications

• Qualified actuary or nearly qualified actuary.
• Practical, wide/deep knowledge of occupational DB pensions.
• Ability to deliver to tight timescales and communicate clearly with actuaries and non-actuaries.
• Experience in supporting and developing actuarial students through project work.

Responsibilities

• Benefit correction and rectification exercises.
• Pre-deal due diligence for bulk annuity providers.
• Governance work for trustees, including testing rules to benefits.
• Benefit creation exercises, such as contingent spouse pensions.
• Proforma calculations for administration teams on smaller clients.
• Calculations testing, identifying errors and improvements.
• Data validation, audits and improvement projects.
• Act as primary client contact on some projects.
• Prepare and review consulting reports as required.

Job description

The Special Projects team provide excellence to clients in relation to varied pension projects both for ongoing pension schemes and those heading towards or in the process of buy in/out or wind up.Their team enable their pensions clients to undertake transactions and derisking exercises by confirming the quality, consistency and reliability of pensions data.

• Benefit correction/rectification exercises
• Undertaking pre-deal due diligence for bulk annuity providers
• Providing governance work for trustees including testing application of rules to benefits
• Benefit creation exercises, such as contingent spouse pensions
• Benefit calculation proforma for administration teams to use on smaller clients
• Calculations testing (both doing calculations to test against automated results and using pensions knowledge to identify errors in/improve automated calculations)
• Data validation/audits and improvement/creation projects
• Acting as the client’s primary point of contact on some projects
• Producing/reviewing consulting reports on projects, as required
