Job summary

Apprenticeship opportunity in finance at Shirley, Solihull. You'll train on the job in accounting and finance while gaining hands-on experience in a supportive team.

The programme leads to the AAT Level 2 certificate, with time away from work for specialist training. Training provided by Solihull College and University Centre, starting 28 September 2026 for 1 year.

Hours are 35 per week, 9:00am-5:00pm, with a £14,560 annual wage in year one and progression opportunities based on performance.

Qualifications

  • 3 other (grade 5/4 or above) required.
  • English (grade 5/4 or above) required.
  • Maths (grade 5/4 or above) required.
  • Knowledge of standard office tools is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Be aware of the organisation's needs and activities and their impact for accounting and finance.
  • Identify, collate and process financial and accounting data from primary sources such as business records.
  • Examine financial and accounting data to identify issues with quality and reliability as instructed.
  • Rectify errors in financial and accounting data, escalating problems beyond their remit as appropriate.
  • Reconcile transactional data to minimise errors in outputs like invoices, bank statements and payroll.
  • Plan and review workloads with supervisor to use time effectively.
  • Communicate with stakeholders using professional language across media.
  • Use finance and accounting software to input and manage data securely.
  • Provide support to team members to meet timescales and quality expectations.
  • Keep up to date with developments to improve relevant skills.

Job description

Summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to begin your career in finance in a growing accountancy firm in Shirley, Solihull. There will be opportunity to progress to higher levels, more responsibility with support and training in a friendly team.

Wage

£14,560 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Hours

9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. 1 hour unpaid lunch break.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You'll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you'll do at work
  • Be aware of the organisation's needs and activities and their impact for accounting and finance.
  • Identify, collate and process financial and accounting data from primary sources such as business records.
  • Examine financial and accounting data to identify issues with quality and reliability as instructed and in accordance with guidance.
  • Rectify errors in financial and accounting data, escalating problems beyond their remit as appropriate.
  • Reconcile transactional data to minimise the chance of errors in financial and accounting outputs such as sales and purchase invoices, sale and purchase orders, bank statements, and payroll.
  • Plan and review workloads with supervisor to ensure best use of time to complete allocated tasks efficiently.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using appropriate methods and professional language. Examples may include letters, 'phone, face-to-face, e-mail, video call, online chat functions, etc.
  • Use financial and accounting software packages to input and manage data safely and securely in line with organisational instructions.
  • Provide support to team members to help ensure that financial and accounting activities are carried out within expected timescales and quality expectations.
  • Keep up to date with developments to enhance relevant skills and take responsibility for own professional development.

Training schedule

Training will be provided by Solihull College and an assessor will be allocated to support you. Coaching in the workplace, on teams as well as scheduled sessions at the Solihull campus and time spent training will be part of the agreed working hours.

At the end of your training, you will complete AAT Level 2 certificate in accounting, role scenario assessment, a portfolio of evidence, with a Q and A to achieve the accounting assistant level 2 apprenticeship standard.
