Job summary

Walpole Dunn in Taunton offers an Accounts Assistant apprenticeship focusing on a broad mix of accountancy and tax work. You’ll train on the job toward becoming a client portfolio holder under a director, supporting clients to reach their business goals.

The role starts 4 January 2027, runs for 1 year 3 months, with 37h30m weekly, working mainly on site at Viney Court, Taunton. Training includes time away for professional modules and ACCA progression.

Qualifications

  • English and Maths at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
  • Apprenticeship includes on‑the‑job training with professional study.

Responsibilities

  • Handle incoming telephone calls and respond to client enquiries professionally.
  • Assist with preparing client accounts using cloud-based accounting software and spreadsheets.
  • Support preparation of client tax returns and related documentation.
  • Attend client meetings with directors to understand clients' businesses and financial needs.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships via meetings, calls, emails and written correspondence.
  • Learn about corporate and personal tax planning and apply knowledge to support clients.
  • Develop understanding of Company Secretarial requirements and Companies House procedures.
  • Assist in preparing and interpreting business management information and financial reports.
  • Contribute to developing future team members by training new staff when experienced.

Summary

An exciting opportunity to become an Accounts Assistant at a firm offering exposure to a variety of accountancy and tax matters. The successful candidate will train to become a core part of the team and ultimately a client portfolio holder under the leadership of a director, helping their clients achieve their business goals.

Wage

£15,600 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Hours

Monday- Friday with flexible working available around the core office hours.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You'll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you'll do at work
  • Handling incoming telephone calls and responding to client enquiries in a professional manner
  • Assisting with the preparation of client accounts, including accurate data entry using cloud-based accounting software and spreadsheets
  • Supporting the preparation of client tax returns and related documentation
  • Attending client meetings alongside the directors to develop an in-depth understanding of clients' businesses and financial needs
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships through face‑to‑face meetings, telephone conversations, emails, and written correspondence
  • Learning about corporate and personal tax planning and proactively applying this knowledge to support clients
  • Developing an understanding of company secretarial requirements and gaining a sound working knowledge of Companies House procedures and regulations
  • Assisting in the preparation and interpretation of business management information and financial reports
  • Contributing to the development of future team members by supporting and training new staff once suitably experienced

What you'll learn

  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation's standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements, and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve, or upscale transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using a range of approaches and media, with an understanding of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
