Job summary

Milk Education are recruiting an Academic Mentor for a welcoming secondary school in Bury, starting September. The role focuses on providing personalised academic support to pupils who need guidance with study skills, organisation and confidence.

You will work with teachers to set targets, track progress and help students develop independent learning habits. A degree or relevant qualification is desirable; candidates with youth work or mentoring experience are encouraged to apply.

Academic Mentor – Secondary School in Bury

Milk Education are working with a welcoming secondary school in Bury who are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated Academic Mentor to join their team from September.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping young people achieve their goals and who enjoys encouraging students to become more confident, independent and motivated learners.

The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who may need additional guidance with their studies, organisation, confidence or engagement. You will provide encouragement, structure and practical support to help students make progress and develop the skills they need to succeed both in school and beyond.

This role could be particularly well suited to a graduate, aspiring teacher, Teaching Assistant, Learning Mentor or someone with experience supporting young people who is looking to develop their career within education.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an Academic Mentor, you will play an important role in helping students get the most from their education. Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing personalised academic support to individual students and small groups
• Helping pupils recognise their strengths and identify areas where they can improve
• Setting achievable targets with students and helping them work towards these
• Supporting pupils with revision, homework, coursework and general study techniques
• Helping students improve their organisation, time management and independent learning skills
• Encouraging pupils to become more confident and engaged in their education
• Providing additional support to students who may be struggling with motivation or finding aspects of their learning challenging
• Working alongside teachers to understand students’ needs and provide appropriate support
• Keeping track of students’ progress and sharing relevant information with teaching staff
• Encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning and development
• Helping pupils develop resilience and a positive approach when faced with challenges
• Supporting students with preparation for exams, assessments and important academic milestones
• Discussing future education, career options and aspirations with students where appropriate
• Building positive and professional relationships with pupils based on trust and respect
• Contributing to a positive, focused and inclusive school environment
• Following school policies and procedures, particularly around safeguarding and student wellbeing

The Person We’re Looking For

We’d love to hear from candidates who:

• Have experience supporting children or young people within a school, college, tutoring, mentoring or youth work setting
• Have a genuine interest in education and helping students achieve their potential
• Are confident working with young people on a one-to-one and small group basis
• Can communicate clearly and build strong relationships with students
• Are approachable, patient and encouraging
• Can motivate pupils who may lack confidence or enthusiasm towards their studies
• Have strong organisational and time-management skills
• Are reliable and able to work effectively as part of a wider school team
• Can adapt their approach to suit different students and learning needs
• Are proactive and comfortable working independently when required
• Have high expectations of young people and believe that every student can make progress
• Understand the importance of safeguarding and child protection, or are willing to undertake the appropriate training
• Hold a degree or relevant qualification (desirable but not essential)

The rate of pay will be determined in line with the advertised pay scale and will take into consideration your qualifications, previous experience and the specific requirements of the assignment.
