Job summary

Barnsley Hospital is offering a fixed-term role for a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant in their busy Ophthalmology department. You will support patient care through various tasks, gaining experience in multiple clinics. The position requires a Care Certificate and a passion for healthcare, providing an opportunity to work in a high-performing Trust that values teamwork and compassionate leadership.

Qualifications

  • At least 6 months of care experience in health or social care.
  • Willingness to undertake competencies including venepuncture and cannulation.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to check patients' visual acuity and clinical observations.
  • Prepare clinic notes and perform visual fields and OCT scans.
  • Chaperone doctors' clinics across various ophthalmology specialties.

Job description

31 Hours per week, 12 months fixed term/secondment opportunity

The role is a band 3 HCA within a busy Ophthalmology department, working over 5 days with opportunities to work additional clinics. We run several clinics including medical retina, glaucoma, cataract, laser, intravitreal injection, general, and emergency clinics.

Main duties of the job

As an HCA, you will learn to check patients' visual acuity, chaperone doctors' clinics, perform clinical observations, prepare clinic notes, and learn to perform visual fields and OCT scans.

Qualifications
  • Care Certificate
  • Completion of a clinical skills competency-based workbook or equivalent relevant experience to vocational qualification level 3, or willingness to undertake.
  • GCSE Maths & English or qualified to equivalent Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths & English, or willingness to undertake.
Experience
  • At least 6 months of care experience working in a health or social care setting.

Knowledge and Awareness
  • Understanding of confidentiality and information governance.
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols.
