Job summary

Barnsley Hospital is recruiting a Technician in the Decontamination Services Team to decontaminate reusable medical devices across clinical areas.

You will join a team, receive full training, and progress through a Level 2 Apprenticeship with the IDSc Technical Certificate, enabling progression to a qualified Technician role.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilisation of reusable medical devices.
  • Record all tasks in the Healthcare Science Information Systems (tracking and tracing) database.
  • Ensure instrument sets are assembled per contents lists and sterilized to procedures.
  • Work in accordance with SOPs and Quality Management Systems.
  • Support decontamination of medical devices across clinical areas.

Job description

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join Barnsley Facilities Services (BFS) at Barnsley Hospital as a Technician within the Decontamination Services Team. The team is dedicated to delivering high-quality, compliant services at the right pace and cost to Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BHNFT) and other customers, ensuring high levels of satisfaction while maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and service users. You will work as part of a team responsible for the effective and timely decontamination of medical equipment across a range of clinical areas, managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines within a Quality Management System.

The role includes collecting equipment from theatres and departments, and carrying out disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing, and sterilisation of reusable medical devices, including flexible endoscopes. While prior experience is advantageous, it is not essential, as full training and support will be provided to complete a Level 2 Apprenticeship, including the IDSc Technical Certificate, leading to progression into a qualified Technician role.

The shift will do 14:0022:00 Mon to Fri, with alternate Saturdays and possible on-call duties. A permanent contract may be offered on successful completion of the apprenticeship. Applicants invited to interview must bring Maths and English GCSE certificates.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will undertake decontamination science duties and assist (under supervision) the workforce of Decontamination Technician Supervisors, in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.

You will:

-Carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilization of reusable medical devices within the ISO 13485:2016 and UK MDR 2002. --Record all tasks in the Healthcare Science Information Systems (tracking and tracing) database.

-Ensure all instrument sets are assembled in accordance with the sets contents lists and sterilized to laid down procedures. To ensure sterile goods are provided to all users, both internal and external, as and when required.

-Work in accordance with the Departments Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.
