Job summary

NHS Lothian in Edinburgh invites an experienced Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) to join the largest ACCP team in Scotland. You will work autonomously within the critical care path, with a multidisciplinary team, delivering advanced assessment, diagnosis and management of critically ill patients across the full pathway.

The post requires an MSc in ACCP, CICM membership, PVG clearance and current advanced-level practice.

Fixed Term 12 Months

This is an opportunity to work within the largest ACCP team in Scotland to support the delivery of safe and effective critical care. The service is currently delivered on the 2 acute adult sites in the University Hospitals Division the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Western General Hospital. This role is integral to Pan Lothian critical care services who admit patients requiring general ICU and HDU care as well as supporting national and tertiary service provision.

The ACCP role is fully embedded within the medical workforce, contributing to the rota and working alongside consultants & multidisciplinary teams in a dynamic, high-acuity environment. You will practise autonomously within your scope, undertaking advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of critically ill patients across the full pathway -- from admission & stabilisation through to ongoing treatment and discharge.

We are seeking an enthusiastic practitioner, trained using the national ACCP training curriculum, possess a MSc level qualification in Advanced Critical Care Practice, has CICM membership, current experience at an advanced level, and a strong portfolio demonstrating clinical competence and critical care experience. Applicants are welcomed from those professional groups eligible to perform non‑medical prescribing under current statutory requirements. You will be a motivated team player who possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should possess a strong desire to develop themselves to deliver outstanding care within the four pillars of advanced clinical practice, helping to develop the advanced practice strategy within NHS Lothian.

Selection for the post will be carried out using a clinical assessment centre and competency-based interview.

Main duties of the job

The ACCP will provide advanced clinical care to critically ill patients, working autonomously and within the multidisciplinary team to manage complex and deteriorating conditions. The ACCP supports safe, effective care through coordination of patient pathways, including ward rounds, admissions, discharges, and transfers. The ACCP will exercise advanced clinical judgement, working within scope of practice and professional and legal frameworks, taking responsibility for the safety and quality of care, including the management of deteriorating patients across critical care and the wider hospital. The role includes providing specialist advice, supporting medical trainees, trainee ACCPs and nurses, ensuring high standards of clinical practice. The ACCP supports and delivers education across the MDT, including teaching and journal clubs and simulation. You will contribute to service development through guideline/protocol development, rota support, and MDT collaboration. Engage in audit, research and quality improvement to enhance patient safety, improve patient outcomes and service performance.
