Job summary

The City of Kingsland is seeking a Crew Worker to assist in maintaining city utilities, streets, facilities and vehicles. Work is given by oral instructions or work orders and reviewed for quality and timeliness. This full-time role is part of a rotational Public Works program.

Responsibilities include operating hand and power tools, handling chemicals, and performing asphalt and concrete removal and replacement. Work is often outdoors, may involve heavy lifting and standby for emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 1 year in general maintenance or construction preferred.
  • Licenses: Georgia Class C or higher driver's license.

General Statement of Job

The Crew Worker assists in the maintenance of city owned utilities, streets, facilities and vehicles. Assignments are received in the form or oral instruction or work orders and rough notes. Work is reviewed for quality and timeliness of completed projects. This position requires demonstrated competency and increasing independence, knowledge and ability in performing routine and special assignments in a variety of maintenance program areas in the Public Works department. This classification is a full-time position assigned to a rotational program in public works.

Receives supervision from public works supervisors and ongoing training on a wide variety of equipment, operational rules, guidelines, procedures and methods.

Essential Functions
Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Duties in all divisions include some or all of the following: Operates hand and power tools, light and heavy construction equipment and specialized equipment. Handles and applies chemicals. Performs asphalt and concrete removal and replacement. Includes considerable time standing, sitting, walking, driving, kneeling, stooping, crouching, squatting, climbing ladders, crawling, twisting of upper body, lifting heavy objects, operating heavy tools and equipment. Significant amount of time spent working outdoors, working in confined spaces; working with chemicals; occasional extreme noise or vibration; working around electrical, mechanical, chemical or explosive hazards; working around hazardous waste. May be required to operate heavy equipment. May be required to interact with customers on site or when requested; may be required to utilize department or Citywide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties. Engages in a wide variety of tasks such as assisting in the maintenance and repair of water mains, sewer mains, and services; cleans roadside ditches, culverts, and catch basins; and repairs streets, sidewalks, and grounds maintenance. Mows grass and edges and clears sidewalks. Assists other departments in emergency and non-routine situations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Standard and job-specific methods, materials, terminology and safe work practices of maintenance, construction, and maintenance equipment and tools. Knowledge of material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being done. Knowledge of the utilization and care of materials and equipment used. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Skill in: Physical stamina and strength to operate a variety of tools and equipment; perform physical tasks for long periods of time, and ability to lift light and heavy loads (20-90 lbs.); physical flexibility to move objects and operate equipment; demonstrate ability to safely operate and drive vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to: Listen, understand, retain, follow, apply verbal and written instructions or directions; learn effective and safe operation of equipment and tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; respond courteously to public inquiries; recognize and use safe work practices; learn and retain specific and general information concerning equipment, functions, and projects; be available for standby and emergency response coverage (before and after regular work hours; weekends, and holidays).
  • EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:
  • Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance, or construction, completion of high school or the equivalent.
  • Experience: Maintenance Worker -- One year of full time experience in general maintenance, or construction.
  • LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION:
  • Licenses: Possession of a valid Georgia Class "C" and/or Class “A” or "B" Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements; meet requirements, maintain license and a good driving record.
Special Requirements

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities Work is performed primarily out-of-doors involving moderate risks, discomfort, or unpleasantness such as a high level of noise; dust, grease and mud; moving vehicles or machines; cold and/or wet weather. Normal safety precautions are required; and the incumbent may wear some protective clothing and equipment such as rain and snow gear, boots, goggles, and gloves. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven surfaces; and recurring bending, crouching, stooping and reaching; and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Work requires above average physical agility and dexterity. Work requires lifting up to 90 pounds.
