Job summary

British American Tobacco (BAT) offers an undergraduate placement in Analytical Science within the Research & Science function in Southampton for 12 months. Successful candidates will gain hands-on experience with state‑of‑the‑art mass spectrometry technologies, data analysis, and scripting in a busy lab setting while contributing to innovative analytical projects.

The role targets students pursuing Chemistry, Forensic Science, Chemical Engineering or related fields, with opportunities to work on

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Forensic Science or a closely related subject.
• Awareness of analytical and chemical sciences.
• Basic knowledge of mass spectrometry.
• Experience with data analysis.
• Experience with Python or R.
• Be self-motivated and proactive with good time management and organisational skills.
• Collaborative and positive attitude.

Responsibilities

• Develop, validate, and test an automated workflow for targeted and non-targeted analysis in R&D projects using MS, LC or GC technologies.
• Design a programme to analyse and interpret complex spectral data.
• Work closely with experienced scientists in planning, designing and conducting laboratory experiments for R&D projects.
• Develop and/or optimise analytical methods (e.g. measurement of constituents of modern oral products).
