Job summary

Milk Education are seeking a dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant in Bury to support a pupil with autism throughout the school day. You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and school team to help the child access lessons, communicate effectively and develop confidence and independence.

The ideal candidate is calm, nurturing and adaptable, with a patient, consistent approach and a genuine interest in the child’s learning, development and wellbeing.

1:1 Teaching Assistant – Primary School in Bury

Milk Education are currently working with a supportive and welcoming primary school in Bury who are looking to appoint a caring and dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to provide individual support to a pupil with autism.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning and who understands the importance of providing consistent, patient and personalised support.

You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team to support the pupil both academically and socially, helping them feel confident, included and settled within the school environment.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is calm, nurturing and adaptable, with the ability to understand individual needs and build a strong, trusting relationship with the child.

About the Role

As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will provide tailored support throughout the school day. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing dedicated one-to-one support to a primary-aged pupil with autism
  • Supporting the child to access lessons, activities and the wider school curriculum
  • Adapting tasks and activities to suit the pupil’s individual learning needs
  • Helping the pupil develop confidence, independence and positive learning habits
  • Providing encouragement and reassurance when the child finds situations challenging
  • Supporting communication and interaction with adults and peers
  • Helping the pupil develop positive relationships within the classroom and wider school
  • Assisting with transitions between lessons, activities and different areas of the school
  • Supporting the child during breaktimes, lunchtimes and other less structured parts of the school day
  • Helping to establish predictable routines and providing consistency where needed
  • Using appropriate strategies to support emotional regulation and engagement
  • Working alongside the class teacher and SENCO to implement individual support strategies
  • Monitoring the pupil’s progress and sharing relevant observations with the teaching team
  • Encouraging the child to participate in classroom activities while promoting their independence
  • Helping maintain a safe, calm and inclusive learning environment
  • Following school policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, SEND and pupil wellbeing
What We’re Looking For

The school would ideally like to hear from candidates who:

  • Have previous experience supporting children with autism or additional needs
  • Have worked within a primary school, nursery, SEN setting, care environment or similar role
  • Are confident providing individualised support to children
  • Have a patient, calm and nurturing approach
  • Understand that every child has different strengths, needs and ways of communicating
  • Can build a trusting and positive relationship with a child
  • Are able to remain calm and consistent when faced with challenging or unexpected situations
  • Have strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Are willing to work closely with teachers, SENCOs and other professionals
  • Are proactive and able to adapt their approach according to the child’s needs
  • Have a genuine interest in supporting children’s learning, development and wellbeing
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding and child protection, or are willing to complete the relevant training

Experience supporting children with autism, communication difficulties, sensory needs or social and emotional needs would be highly beneficial, although candidates with transferable experience and the right attitude are also encouraged to apply.

This role is paid within the advertised pay scale. Your starting rate will be determined by your qualifications, relevant experience and the requirements of the assignment.
