Position Summary

We have a home‑based position for a Utility Gas Meter Technican that will involve travel in various counties in Florida. This position is based in the Jacksonville, Florida area. Applicants MUST have natural gas experience. This position is responsible for replacing/installing an existing/outdated gas meter with a new gas meter at residential or commercial sites to enhance metering solutions, accurately measure consumption, and ensure transmittal of signals to the network.

What you will do
  • Ensuring that work they perform on the natural gas system and attached equipment is of the highest standard and always left in safe working order or disconnected as per approved standards.
  • Comply with OQ and Training Manuals with the comprehension that errors can and do create hazards that increase the risk of damage to property and loss of life.
  • Report to starting location at beginning of shift to receive route information, hand held device, meters and related materials. Verify that they have the correct amount of materials for the number of route locations. Loads materials into vehicle. Organizes route maps/plans route, fills out time sheets and other paperwork if necessary.
  • Drive company vehicle to first residence/business on route; uses map to locate site if necessary and verifies address using hand held device.
  • Drive or walks route to each customer site depending on the distance. May walk up to 5 miles daily.
  • Contact customer and explains purpose of visit and how long it will take; answer any questions. Locates meter and determines if it is accessible/poses safety hazards.
  • Check hand held device to verify meter number to see if there are any notes about site (i.e., location of meter, obstacles, dogs). Enter reason code into hand held device if meter is not accessible.
  • With the customer, goes to each gas appliance and shuts off gas at the shut‑off valve. If customer is not home, then leave a door hanger. Enter information into hand held indicating that the residence/business was skipped and why.
What you will need
  • Monday‑Friday, 8am‑4:30pm, must have a flexible schedule.
  • High School Diploma or GED, HVAC certificate.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Previous pipe fitting experience.
  • Experience relighting gas appliances and equipment.
  • Must pass meter‑pro.
  • Ability to pass Tribus OQ, Operator Qualified plan.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy to record meter data.
  • Ability to read, write, follow and complete written instructions.
  • Ability to use hand tools.
  • Ability to find locations/address by reading a map and hand‑held device.
  • Ability to key data into hand held device.
  • Basic computer skills helpful.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with customers in a professional manner.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools. Superior attention to detail.

Work Context/Mental Demands/Physical Demands

This position requires working outdoors in all‑weather environments including rain, cold, or high heat. Requires travel by car; may be exposed to road related hazards. May require walking up to 5 miles daily which includes walking at a brisk pace, climbing stairs and walking on unpaved/rough terrain areas, Ability to perform physical duties such as lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted, walking, kneeling, twisting, turning, stooping, reaching, and bending; repeated getting in and out of vehicle. Ability to use hand tools. Exposed to unknown hazards at sites such as dogs. Must use safety equipment as assigned.
