Job summary

Mercor is seeking a Propulsion & Effects Engineer for a contract role. This remote position requires deep expertise in propulsion system design, warhead effects, and advanced modelling to evaluate explosive performance and model terminal effects.

The engineer will draft reference prompts, collaborate with experts, and help AI models distinguish dangerous queries from routine ones, contributing to safe deployment of advanced propulsion-related AI capabilities.

Qualifications

• Experience in munitions and warhead design and effects engineering.
• Background in solid, liquid, or hybrid propulsion system design, test, and qualification.
• Expertise in terminal effects modelling such as blast, fragmentation, and penetration.
• Knowledge of fuzing, safe-and-arm, and initiation system engineering.
• Experience in test range engineering and instrumentation for propulsion or ordnance.

Responsibilities

• Write challenging, single-turn prompts in propulsion and energetic materials and classify them as benign, dual-use, or adversarial.
• Evaluate AI model responses against policy standards and judge correctness of each response.
• Write reference answers and provide technical reasoning for correct responses.
• Collaborate with experts to ensure AI models distinguish between routine and potentially dangerous queries.
• Work independently to improve AI model performance in handling dual-use scenarios.
