Nuclear Medicine Lead Technologist
Location: Billings Clinic Main Campus, Billings, Montana
Shift: Day
Employment Status: Full-Time (0.75 or greater)
Hours per Pay Period: 80 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)
Starting Wage: DOE: $40.91 - 51.14
The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership to the Nuclear Medicine Technologists and supporting the leadership team in coordinating the day-to-day operational activities for nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, and PET/CT services.
Essential Job Functions
- Support and model behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of Billings Clinic and department/service.
- Follow NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) guidelines to limit patient and staff exposures.
- Monitor equipment performance and notify service personnel when needed.
- Prepare radiopharmaceuticals and check their purity.
- Perform clinical assessment and nuclear medicine exams as ordered by the physician.
- Interview patients, explain procedures, and administer pre-medication or radiopharmaceuticals as appropriate.
- Use cognitive nuclear medicine skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to the anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
- Select proper technical factors to perform scans and coordinate with other staff to ensure appropriate patient care.
- Analyze nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, and PET/CT information, medical history, and utilize independent judgment to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
- Utilize computer to process acquired data, access clinical and/or financial information.
- Follow the Quality Management Program for administration of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.
- Maintain patient examination records in accordance with Billings Clinic policies, procedures and standards.
- Coordinate scheduling, transportation, and scanning of patients.
- Follow NRC guidelines for proper storage and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Maintain competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency safety standards relevant to job performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
Lead Responsibilities
- Assist and support the Supervisor and Director in coordinating the day‑to‑day operational activities associated with providing nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology and PET/CT services.
- Assign the work of the Nuclear Medicine Technologists, considering priority, skill, and workflow.
- Act as a resource to staff responding to procedural questions and assisting with problem resolution.
- Participate in and provide feedback into the interviewing and performance appraisal processes.
- Coordinate department for new technologists, provide ongoing training/education, monitor staff education requirements, and conduct/participate in regular staff meetings.
- Investigate and respond to interdepartmental, intradepartmental, and patient complaints.
- Work with the Radiation Safety Officer to ensure NRC guidelines are followed.
- Gather data regarding personnel, supplies and equipment needs to provide input into the development of radiology policies, procedures, short and long term goals and objectives.
- Assign staff to maintain quality assurance records; perform quality assurance monitoring by reviewing randomly selected charts for documentation requirements.
- Evaluate equipment and repair orders when needed.
- Evaluate new equipment under consideration for purchase.
Minimum Qualifications
- Registration with the NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board) Health care provider CPR certification.
- Valid physician registration and relevant licensing.
- At least 3 years of experience in nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology or PET/CT services.
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical setting.
- Strong communication, organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and patient care.
