Job summary

Mercor is seeking PDF annotation and transcription experts fluent in Japanese to join our remote team. You will source documents, annotate structure, transcribe kanji/hiragana/katakana, and capture metadata with high precision for AI training data projects.

The role is a contract position paying $34 per hour, with emphasis on exact character-level accuracy, handling unfamiliar layouts such as vertical text and multi-column newspapers, and collaborating with a second Japanese expert to review

Qualifications

• Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
• Professional experience in interpretation, transcription, translation, or editorial work.
• Exact character-level accuracy and precision over speed.
• Systematic approach applying a taxonomy consistently.
• Comfort with unfamiliar layouts like vertical text and multi-column newspapers.

Responsibilities

• Annotate structure by identifying and bounding every meaningful region, assigning component types and reading-order indices.
• Record relationships by linking regions to their parent components like figures or tables.
• Transcribe faithfully, reproducing all text exactly as it appears, including kanji, hiragana, katakana, and handwritten content.
• Capture page metadata such as language, document type, source, page dimensions, and flags for tables and handwriting.
• Review a colleague's work, ensuring tasks are reviewed end-to-end by a second Japanese expert.

• Knowledge of script and encoding, including Unicode normalization and Japanese input methods.
