A global consulting firm in the energy sector is seeking an Entry Level Substation Civil Designer to perform engineering design activities for electrical substations. The ideal candidate will have an associates or technical degree and three years of civil design experience with AutoCAD/MicroStation. The position allows for a hybrid work environment, requiring candidates to be within driving distance of an office.

Entry Level Substation Civil Designer

POWER Engineers, a member of WSP, is currently seeking a Civil Designer/Drafter to perform engineering design activities for electrical substations. This position is in the Power Delivery Northeast Civil/Structural Substation Department, with offices in the following locations: Freeport and Augusta, Maine; Foxborough, Massachusetts; Syracuse, New York, Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Columbus, Ohio. Flexibility is available for a hybrid work environment (employee will need to live within driving distance of one of the offices).

Roles and Responsibilities
  • All aspects of electrical civil design including permitting support, site design, foundation design, structure design, and control building design.
  • Learning, understanding, and implementing CAD knowledge; learning client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure that work produced conforms to the client's standards and expectations.
  • Being responsible for knowing and following POWER's standards, procedures, and processes; collaborating on design issues; and seeking guidance from those with more experience.
  • Preparation of drawing packages to satisfy client and code requirements.
  • Occasional travel will be required.
Required Education/Experience
  • Associates/technical degree in an accredited drafting program, or sufficient industry experience.
  • Three (3) years civil design/drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, preferably in an engineering work environment.
  • Ability to successfully participate in multiple projects concurrently.
  • Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong command of English with good written and oral communication skills.
  • Candidacy must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
Desired Education/Experience
  • Experience in electric utility substation design (15kV through 500kV) is a plus.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil3D or Microstation Open‑Roads (In‑Roads) are beneficial.
  • Experience with Autodesk Raster Design or Bentley Descartes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Good background with mathematics.
