Designer I, Civil/Structural & Mechanical
Location: Stonington, CT (or Charlotte, NC). Full‑time direct hire position.
Position Overview
Designer I, Civil/Structural & Mechanical with Zachry Nuclear Engineering, Inc. responsible for developing structural diagrams, pipe and conduit support configurations, foundation designs, equipment mounting details, general arrangements, fire stops and seals details, P&IDs, piping plans and sections, and isometrics. Ability to produce complex engineering drawings in 2‑D or 3‑D environments, check drawings for accuracy, dimensions, spelling, drafting standards and completeness, and participate in field walk‑downs necessary.
Responsibilities
- Develop structural diagrams (pipe/conduit support, foundation, equipment mounting, general arrangement, fire stop, seal details, process instrumentation, P&IDs, piping plans, isometrics).
- Create complex engineering drawings in 2‑D or 3‑D environments.
- Verify drawings for accuracy, dimensions, spelling, drafting standards, and completeness.
- Participate in field walk‑downs to obtain measurements, verify as‑built documentation, and develop field sketches for plant modifications and design installations.
- Communicate with project engineers and other disciplines to develop drawings and resolve design discrepancies.
- Interface with customers and construction representatives to integrate designs to satisfy their standards.
- Exercise independent judgment to develop designs with minimal direction, support multiple concurrent projects, and perform equipment walk‑downs, including climbing ladders, working at heights, carrying up to 50 lbs, accessing security‑controlled areas, and confined or hazardous zones.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in drafting, design or engineering technology, or 4 years of equivalent experience in design of structural components and/or mechanical systems.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in structural engineering design and/or mechanical system design practices.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation CAD software, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to direct drafting personnel on drawing assignments.
- Technical knowledge of design practices, codes and standards applicable to structural components.
- Working knowledge of structural steel types, materials, mechanical design principles, and practices.
- Effective time‑management skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to pass security and drug screening; maintain unescorted commercial nuclear plant access.
- Working knowledge of laser scanning tools, total stations, registration software is a plus.
- Experience with plant modification packages and/or field experience on nuclear power plant projects is a plus.
- Knowledge or use of Raster Design or 3‑D modeling is a plus.
Additional Requirements
- Travel to client sites and periods of field/office work.
- Overtime work required.
- No relocation assistance available.
- Ability to comply with export‑control laws as applicable.
- Job hazardous: access to high temperatures, high radiation, confined spaces.
