WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Back-End Web Applications Developer – European Commission

We are looking for an experienced Back-End Developer to join our client’s Information Systems team, supporting digital solutions in the public health, food safety, and internal market domains. This position involves working closely with policy units to develop, maintain, and optimize core applications and systems that directly support health, food safety, and regulatory initiatives across Europe.

In this role, you will play a key part in creating secure, scalable, and high-performing back-end applications that support the mission of protecting human health, animal welfare, and food safety within Europe.

YOUR TASKS

  • Develop back-end web applications , implementing core business logic.
  • Design and optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability.
  • Design and develop APIs for seamless integration with other systems.
  • Implement security and data protection measures to ensure compliance and confidentiality.
  • Participate in the design and creation of scalable software solutions.
  • Write clean, functional code on the back-end and ensure code integrity and organization.
  • Compile and analyze data, processes, and codes to troubleshoot issues and identify areas for improvement.
  • Test and fix bugs or other coding issues to ensure high functionality.
  • Create technical documentation for maintenance and updates.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Proven background of 7+ years in back-end development with Java (JDK8 or later) and JEE (version 7 or later), including XML and SOAP-based web services (e.g., JAX-WS).
  • Strong proficiency in Oracle RDBM for database management.
  • At least 5 years of experience with Git or SVN for version control and collaboration tools, particularly the Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence, Bamboo).
  • Thorough understanding of the web development cycle, programming techniques, and optimization methods.
  • Expertise in implementing security and data protection for high-compliance environments.
  • Solid organizational, time-management, and communication skills, with the ability to integrate into an international and multicultural environment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Location : Brussels, Belgium. Home-working or contractor’s premises at a distance which allows service providers to be onsite within 2 hours, up to 5 days per month.
