CGIAR System Organization seeks an Associate Scientist focused on Gender and Social Inclusion, aiming to improve agricultural practices and inclusivity in global food systems. This role involves designing and executing impactful social science research while collaborating with a diverse team aimed at enhancing gender equity and social justice in agricultural contexts.

TheInternational Potato Center (CIP) works at this frontier. Together with otherresearch centers of the CGIAR and hundreds of science and innovation partnersaround the world, we develop new knowledge, technologies, research capacitiesand partnerships to address agriculture and food system priorities of countriesin the Global South. With an emphasis on potato, sweet-potato and other root and tubercrops, we have helped improve the livesof millions of farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America . Qualitative social science has been acornerstone of our success, and we are looking for a dynamic andresults-oriented new associate scientist to work on gender and social inclusionchallenges in agricultural research for development contexts.
Theposition: The new Associate Scientist (Gender and Social Inclusion) will workclosely with our teams of social and biological scientists to support thedesign, delivery and scaling of innovations that better respond to the needs,challenges and opportunities faced by women, young people and otherintersectional groups. Through engagement in newly started research projectsand programs, they will collaborate with like-minded scientists across theCGIAR. Gender equity and social inclusion are amongst our key concerns as wework with our partners from national agricultural research institutes,universities, private sector and civil society to help make agrifood systemsmore sustainable and just.
The new Associate Scientist will engage closely withpartners in the co-design and co-implementation of research endeavors.The goal of this position is to facilitatedialogue and conduct high quality research in collaboration with a diversity ofactors including internal and external stakeholders.
Theposition offers exciting mid-career opportunities in a dynamic and highlyvisible international work environment. It will report to the leader of CIP’sSocial and Nutritional Sciences Division. The position will be based in one ofCIP’s main offices as will be agreed with the selected candidate.
● Contribute to the design and implementation of a globalresearch partnership that integrates qualitative and quantitative socialsciences into biological and agricultural research at CIP, working closely withresearchers from CIP and CGIAR.
● Co-design and co-implement high-quality and relevant social science research on major development challenges within the frameworkof evolving CIP and CGIAR Science and Innovation Strategies and research projectsand programs, emphasizing impacts on gender equity and social inclusion.
● Publish results from this researchin high-impact peer reviewed journals and present findings atinternational conferences.
● Contribute to the design and implementation of CIP’s globalresearch portfolio to foster gender equality and social inclusion.
● Work collaboratively with the team of social andbiophysical scientists at CIP to Identify and pursue funding opportunities tosupport new social science and integrated research at CIP.
Whatare we looking for?
● PhD or equivalent experience in a relevantSocial Science discipline (e.g. anthropology, sociology, gender studies, geography,political sciences, rural and development studies).
● A minimum of 2years post-graduate experience in an international context with a growing academicpublications record.
● Knowledge andcompetencies of latest qualitative and mixed-methods methodologies andapproaches in social sciences and their application to research on globalchallenges of gender equity, social inclusion, and poverty reduction in theagricultural sector.
● Competency ininter-disciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, in particular working withresearch teams in biotechnology, biological, agricultural, food orenvironmental sciences.
● Stronginterpersonal skills for teamwork with scientists and partners from diverseinternational and professional backgrounds.
● ExcellentEnglish writing and verbal communication skills. Verbal communication skills inother languages are an asset.
