A leading organization focused on climate-smart agriculture seeks an Assistant Agronomist Consultant to support field activities in Malawi. This role involves experimental design, data collection, and training facilitation to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. Candidates should have a degree in a related field and experience in donor-funded projects.
The International Potato Center (CIP) isimplementing the DeSIRA project, focusing on Climate-Smart Innovations toimprove the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of agriculture andfood systems in Malawi through multidisciplinary research. The project aims toenhance climate change adaptation within agricultural and food systems bydeveloping integrated technological innovations and fostering their uptake byfarmers. Additionally, the project seeks to inform policymakers and scalingpartners about the potential of these technologies to contribute to climateresilience and sustainability.
To ensure its successful operationalization, theproject has decided to hire an Assistant Agronomist Consultant to assist theResearch Associate (Agronomist) with field activities as outlined in thedeliverables.
Objective
TheAssistant Agronomist will support the Research Associate (Agronomist) withexperimental design and setup, field establishment, facilitation of trainingand trials, data collection, technology evaluation and trial monitoring andorganizing field days
In executing thisassignment, the consultant will undertake the following specific tasks:
· Mobilize necessary resources, including labourand equipment, to ensure timely field preparation and crop management.
· Develop a detailed action plan for implementingexperimental activities at co-location research stations and on-farm trials.
· Select appropriate sites for both on-stationand on-farm trials, ensuring suitability for the planned experiments.
· Support the setup of field experiments,coordinating with relevant stakeholders to establish both on-station andon-farm trials.
· Facilitate a training session for extensionstaff on proper trial establishment techniques to ensure consistency andquality.
· Facilitate the planting of trials at bothon-station and on-farm sites, ensuring that protocols are followed accurately.
· Enter and submit collected data to the M and Eteam
· Conduct participatory technology evaluationduring the vegetative stage
· Support in the collection of success stories

SelectionCriteria
· Degree or diploma in agronomy, agriculture,soil science and other related fields
· Good understanding of experimental designs,field layout and data collection
· Ability to use MS Office excel as a datamanagement tool
· Self-starter and ability to work under minimalsupervision
· Minimum of 3 years of experience working fordonor-funded agricultural development projects.
· Advanced written and oral communication skillsin English
· Good interpersonal skills
Time frame
· The successful Candidate(s) will be placed onroster and will remain eligible for consideration for a period of 12 months,after which their status may be reviewed based on the needs of CIP. Rosterplacement does not guarantee employment but ensures that the candidate will beconsidered for relevant, similar openings during the roster period.
