You will collaborate with design teams, contractors, utility providers and stakeholders through construction, testing, energisation and handover, ensuring quality and compliance with standards.

Substation Project Manager – Data Centre Construction

V7 Recruitment is currently supporting a confidential client on a major hyperscale data centre development in Finland.

We are seeking an experienced Substation Project Manager to oversee the planning, coordination and execution of substation and associated electrical infrastructure works supporting the delivery of a major mission-critical data centre facility.

This is a key project leadership position, responsible for ensuring the substation package is delivered safely, on programme, to budget and in accordance with the required technical, quality and performance standards.

The successful candidate will work closely with design teams, contractors, utility providers, vendors, commissioning specialists and wider project stakeholders throughout construction, testing, energisation and handover.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Management & Coordination

• Lead and manage the full lifecycle of the substation package from pre-construction through construction, commissioning, energisation and handover.
• Develop and manage project schedules, milestones and deliverables in line with the overall data centre programme.
• Coordinate cross-functional teams across civil, structural, electrical, design and commissioning disciplines.
• Manage key interfaces between the substation works and wider data centre electrical infrastructure.
• Maintain effective communication across all project stakeholders.
• Lead project progress meetings, site inspections and coordination meetings.

2. Construction Execution

• Oversee day-to-day construction activities to ensure alignment with project plans, programme and technical requirements.
• Coordinate contractors, subcontractors and vendors to ensure works are delivered safely and to the required quality standards.
• Review construction drawings, RFIs, technical submittals and method statements.
• Monitor contractor performance, construction progress and key project milestones.
• Coordinate construction sequencing and interfaces between civil, structural and electrical works.
• Identify programme risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.

3. Stakeholder, Quality & Risk Management

• Act as a key point of contact for contractors, consultants, utility providers and vendors involved in the substation works.
• Ensure effective coordination between design engineers, construction teams and commissioning specialists.
• Implement quality control processes to ensure high-standard delivery of all works.
• Ensure compliance with project specifications, client requirements, relevant regulations and industry standards.
• Identify and manage technical, construction and programme risks.
• Provide regular project updates and progress reports to project leadership and client stakeholders.

4. Testing, Energisation & Handover

• Coordinate testing, commissioning and energisation activities with contractors, utility providers, vendors and commissioning teams.
• Ensure all required inspections, testing and documentation are completed prior to energisation.
• Ensure equipment and systems meet operational and performance requirements.
• Support integrated testing of associated electrical infrastructure where required.
• Manage close-out documentation including test records, O&M manuals, as-built drawings, warranties and asset registers.
• Support operations teams during handover and transition into the live environment.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Proven experience delivering complex HV substations, electrical infrastructure or major power distribution projects.
• Strong knowledge of HV/MV systems, substations, transformers, switchgear and electrical distribution infrastructure.
• Strong project management experience across programme, cost, risk and quality.
• Proven ability to lead contractors and manage multiple project stakeholders.
• Experience managing construction activities, technical interfaces and contractor performance.
• Knowledge of testing, commissioning and energisation processes.
• Strong understanding of electrical safety requirements and relevant industry standards.

Desirable

• Previous experience within hyperscale or colocation data centre construction.
• Experience managing utility interfaces and grid connection requirements.
• Previous experience delivering major substation or power infrastructure projects in Finland.
• Knowledge of Finnish regulations, building codes and relevant industry standards.
