Job summary

VTT invites applications for a Research Scientist role within the Silicon Photonics design and integration team in Espoo. You will develop fast photonic integrated circuits and explore their use in optical interconnects, RoF, microwave photonics, and quantum computing interfaces.

Qualifications

Master's degree in physics, photonics, electrical engineering or related field with dedicated courses covering theory, technology and applications of photonics.
Basic understanding of optical waveguides, optical single-mode fibers, lasers, lenses, and photodetectors.
Theoretical understanding of RF signals in the MHz and GHz range and the technology to create, manipulate, propagate and receive such signals.
Basic programming skills, e.g., Python, and proficient English communication.

Responsibilities

Design, simulate and test optical waveguide components such as modulators, switches, multiplexers, delay lines and photodetectors.
Design, simulate and test PICs and PIC-based systems with fast optical signals in MHz/GHz range.
Contribute to assembly and packaging of PIC-based systems and integration with electronics and software.
Collaborate with wafer processing experts to ensure PICs can be fabricated at VTT or elsewhere.
Contribute to reporting and dissemination of research results.
