Job summary

Sensmet is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own the software platform for our next-generation hardware. You will lead the architecture and UI development of a greenfield project using Qt and C++, and build a Python scripting layer to empower hardware engineers and scientists.

You will also maintain the existing SenSpec Java desktop control software and resolve field issues to ensure smooth, global operations.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take ownership of a strategically important initiative: building the software platform for our next-generation hardware.

In this role, you will lead the software architecture and user interface development of this true greenfield project within an agile engineering team, where your choices directly define the platform's foundation.

You will be responsible for building a high-performance desktop GUI and the core business logic engine using a modern Qt and C++ stack. Furthermore, you will develop an accessible Python scripting and prototyping layer that empowers our hardware engineers and scientific researchers to rapidly test and validate new features. A crucial part of your daily work will involve collaborating closely with embedded developers to design robust communication protocols and clean API boundaries across microcontrollers, embedded boards, and networked hardware nodes. This greenfield development will take approximately 70% of your time.

Alongside this greenfield development, we also need your expertise to maintain our existing Java-based desktop control software, SenSpec. You will build diagnostic features and software hooks to keep physical hardware testing moving fast. At the same time, you will resolve critical field issues to guarantee operational stability for active customer installations globally. This ongoing product lifecycle work covers the remaining ~30% of your role.

Key Competencies and Experience

• Software for Hardware Products: Demonstrated experience developing desktop GUIs, control software, or core engines for physical hardware products (e.g., industrial machinery, lab equipment, medical devices, robotics, or scientific instrumentation).
• Modern C++ & Python: Strong hands-on proficiency in C++ and Python for application logic and hardware control.
• Java Fundamentals: Ability to read, navigate, and maintain existing Java codebases (Java 8+, object-oriented architecture, thread management).
• Systematic & Collaborative Mindset: You write clean, modular code with clear documentation, communicate progress and bottlenecks proactively, and thrive working alongside hardware engineers and scientists to solve complex physical system problems.
• English Proficiency: Excellent professional working proficiency in English (English is our working environment language).

Location & Ways of Working
