Job summary

UNU-WIDER in Helsinki seeks an Associate Programme Officer to support the Partnerships & Programme Support Unit and help deliver the institute's work programme. You will coordinate project activities, liaise with clients and provide analytical support for reports to donors and stakeholders.

The role requires a university degree, 2+ years in project management, and demonstrated supervisory experience. Strong drafting skills in English and ability to work in a multicultural team are essential.

Qualifications

  • Advanced university degree in business administration, management, economics, social sciences, or related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, administration or related area.
  • Working experience in a supervisory role, particularly for planning, monitoring and implementation of complex, multi-stakeholder programmes and projects, is an asset.
  • Experience with the United Nations system or similar international organization and with relevant policies, guidelines and procedures is an asset.
  • Excellent drafting skills with fluency in both oral and written English; knowledge of other UN languages would be an asset.
  • Excellent teamwork with leadership and ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfils the function of team lead for UNU-WIDER's Project Support Team within the Partnerships & Programme Support Unit, supervises and guides the project support staff in the day-to-day implementation of the UNU-WIDER work programme, its projects, and activities, and represents the Project Support Team in internal discussions on workflows and other institutional development projects.
  • Works with internal and external clients to facilitate development, implementation, and evaluation of the Institute's projects; monitors and analyses project implementation; reviews documents and reports; identifies problems and issues and recommends corrective actions.
  • Carries out basic research on aspects of the UNU-WIDER work programme, including collecting, analysing and presenting data for reports to donors, Advisory Groups, United Nations University, and the United Nations.
  • Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation related to the work programme, including review and analysis of emerging issues and trends.
  • Coordinates budget-related activities (preparation and submission of programmes/projects, progress reports, financial statements, monitoring of expenses) and prepares related reports.
  • Assists in developing the institute's biennium budget and monitors its implementation across the work programme and activities.
  • Participates in survey initiatives; assists with data collection tools, analyses responses and prepares preliminary conclusions.
  • Contributes to preparation of written outputs such as annual reports, project reports, proposals and analytical notes.
  • Provides administrative and substantive support to meetings, including agenda topics, participants, background documents and logistics.
