Job summary

Aalto University’s Department of Applied Physics invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in 2D quantum devices and condensed matter physics, focusing on gate-tunable van der Waals materials studied with STM.

The position is fully funded for four years, with the initial two-year appointment and potential extension after midterm review. The role is based in Otaniemi, Espoo, with a hybrid work model and access to state-of-the-art facilities.

Qualifications

• A Master's degree in condensed matter physics or a closely related field.
• Genuine interest in experimental condensed matter physics.
• Experience with nanofabrication and cleanroom processing of 2D materials.
• Hands-on experience with low-temperature and ultra-high vacuum systems.
• Experience with scanning tunneling microscopy.
• Knowledge of 2D quantum materials and related physics.

Responsibilities

• Fabrication of quantum devices in cleanroom facilities, including lithography, deposition, exfoliation and transfer of 2D materials.
• Running low-temperature STM experiments on these devices.
• Collaboration with leading theoretical physicists.
• Analysis of measured data and writing scientific articles.
