Job summary

LMI Technologies in Oulu, Finland, seeks a Mechanical Designer II to design, test and document advanced optomechanical systems for optical 3D sensors. You will work within the R&D Technology team, collaborating with optical engineers and cross-functional partners to meet project objectives.

You should bring a strong foundation in mechanical engineering, optomechanics, GD&T, and hands-on experience with Zemax and 3D CAD tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master in mechanical/optomechanical engineering required.
  • 2–5 years in high-tech industry on related projects.
  • Strong knowledge of optomechanical sensor design is a plus.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools and Zemax is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems for optomechanical applications with precision.
  • Collaborate with optical engineers to integrate mechanical and optical designs.
  • Prototype development, testing, and design iteration based on results.
  • Work with manufacturing, QA and PM teams to ensure project success.
  • Produce technical reports and required documentation.

Job description

The Mechanical Designer II position routinely applies their skills to design, develop, test, document and deliver against requirements and specifications.

This position is expected to be an intermediate level where independent skill and company knowledge are applied to meet well established project deliverables. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of precision mechanical engineering, optomechanical design, and numerical and/or statistical analysis.

You will contribute to the mechanical design and manufacturing of highly advanced optical 3D sensors.

Working as part of our global Technology (R&D) team, you will report to the Product Design Team Lead at our Oulu, Finland office.

  • Design and develop mechanical systems and components for optomechanical applications, ensuring high precision and reliability.
  • Collaborate with optical engineers to integrate mechanical designs with optical systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Participate in prototype development and testing; analyze results and make necessary design adjustments.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management, to ensure successful project execution.
  • Produce technical reports and required documentation.
Education and Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or Master’s level degree in a related field such as Optomechanical Engineering
  • 2-5 years experience in the high technology industry working on various projects relating to their area of study
  • Knowledge of optomechanical sensor design is considered an asset
  • Excellent knowledge of tools required by their discipline, specifically 3D CAD software and PDM systems; Zemax proficiency is a plus
  • Familiar with spreadsheets and cloud-based collaboration platforms
  • Strong working knowledge of industry standards and best practices, including GD&T principles
  • Demonstrated ability in past project accomplishments
  • Pursues problem solving with clear understanding of facts and defines test plan and solution strategies
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Solid interpersonal skills are required to function appropriately in a team and across other departments
