Job description

Are you interested in a more sustainable future and designing functional mechanical solutions? Polar Night Energy, an energy tech company based in Tampere, Finland, is now looking for a Mechanical Designer to join its expanding team!

What will you be doing?

With the new technology developed by Polar Night Energy, energy can be stored in sand as thermal energy. The technology is already in commercial use in Pornainen and Kankaanpää, Finland and the next Sand Battery is under construction in Vääksy, Finland.

As a Mechanical Designer, you will join the product team responsible for designing and developing Polar Night Energy’s thermal energy storage products in close collaboration with sales, project, and R&D teams. Your work will be divided between designing for sales and delivery projects as well as continuous product development.

Your primary daily tool will be SolidWorks, and in this role you will participate in projects throughout their entire lifecycle, from sales-phase design to implementation. You will collaborate with customers, subcontractors, and suppliers.

In a growing company, your role will be varied and dynamic, and your responsibilities may evolve based on your interests and the company’s needs. However, your primary objective is to ensure that the designed solutions are technically sound, high-quality, and meet project requirements.

What kind of professional are we looking for?

We are looking for a Mechanical Designer who already has relevant experience in industrial design work and the ability to take ownership of tasks independently. You will succeed in this role if you can grasp complex systems, enjoy the dynamic nature of a growth company, and are motivated to develop solutions collaboratively with the team.

We particularly value experience in power plant environments or similar industrial settings involving large equipment, steel structures, or process systems. We also hope you are motivated to learn new things and want to contribute to building technology that advances a more sustainable future.

What we expect from you:
  • A relevant technical educational background (BSc / MSc, e.g. Mechanical Engineering)
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience in mechanical design
  • Strong proficiency in design software; SolidWorks is used at Polar Night Energy
  • Good mechanical drawing skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in both Finnish and English
Additionally considered an advantage:
  • Experience in power plant environments or similar industrial settings, including pressure equipment
  • Experience with large steel structures such as silos, tanks, or process equipment
  • Experience in layout or piping design
  • Understanding of strength calculations
  • Knowledge related to welding, welding quality control, or industrial quality
What Polar Night Energy offers you:
  • An opportunity to help build a more sustainable future with a novel technology that has gained international attention
  • The chance to make a visible impact; as the company is still small and in an early stage, you can influence not only your role but also the company’s growth, processes, and ways of working
  • A knowledgeable and enthusiastic work community united by a shared mission of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future
  • A work environment where employee wellbeing is a top priority; Polar Night Energy employees work a 30-hour week
  • Flexibility and autonomy in planning your work, with the option to use office facilities or work from home according to your preferences. However, we hope to see you regularly at the Tampere office
  • Employee benefits such as cultural, sports, and lunch benefits
  • A salary based on your experience and skills; in this role, your monthly salary will likely start with a 3 or a 4

We are committed to ensuring equal participation in the recruitment process and will accommodate individual accessibility needs where necessary.
