Coolbrook is seeking an Experienced Mechanical Designer to own the design definition of RDH and RDR components and assemblies. You will deliver 3D models, drawings, BOMs, and interface definitions, while ensuring maintainability and safe assembly with input from suppliers and internal teams.
The role, based in UK or Finland offices, reports to the Engineering Manager and involves coordinating with multiple stakeholders to release robust designs and support product variants across projects.
We are looking for an Experienced Mechanical Designerto join Coolbrook’s Technology & Engineering team.
As Experienced Mechanical Designer, you create and own the design definition of our RDH and RDR components and assemblies: 3D models, drawings, tolerances and bills of materials. Suppliers must be able to make it right the first time, and our teams must be able to assemble and maintain it safely.
You receive the flow-path geometry from aero, and margins and design feedback from stress and rotor dynamics. Requirements come from systems, field service, and customers. You deliver released models, drawings, BOMs, interface definitions, and assembly instructions. You run simple sizing checks, but you leave the detailed analysis to the specialists
Coolbrook offers you an exciting role in an international, dynamic, growing company with a real opportunity to make an impact and make history. In this permanent role, you will preferably be based in the UK or Finland offices and report to our Engineering Manager while collaborating with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
Layout and integration: general arrangement and module layouts, space claims, and interface control drawings to the motor, skid, piping, and foundation.
Detail design: rotating and static parts (blades, vanes, discs, shafts, casings, bearing housings, seals and fasteners), with materials, coatings and processes chosen together with materials engineering.
Design for maintainability: service access, field-replaceable modules, lifting and special tooling for site work, and spare parts definition,
assembly trials and field feedback
Drawings and GD&T: fully toleranced drawings to ISO GPS (ISO 1101 / 8015), BS 8888 or ASME Y14.5, with a clear datum strategy, fits to ISO 286, and identified critical characteristics.
Tolerance and clearance analysis: 1D and 3D stack-ups, cold and running clearances (using temperatures from the thermal analysts), and assembly sequence.
Design for manufacture and assembly: machining, forging, casting, welding and additive processes. Answer supplier queries, support first-article inspection, and disposition non-conformances with stress.
Guide internal teams and coordinate with external engineering service providers.
Assembly, tooling and service: assembly and maintenance procedures, special tooling, lifting fixtures and test rig hardware.
Configuration management: PLM (such as Teamcenter), engineering change requests and notices, BOM structure and drawing release.
Safety and compliance: DFMEA, design reviews, and input to the risk assessment (EN ISO 12100) for the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 and PED, where applicable.
A BSc or MSc in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or an equivalent technical qualification with a strong design track record.
Expert use of a major 3D CAD system (Siemens NX, CATIA V5 or Creo) on large assemblies, and working knowledge of PLM.
Command of GD&T and tolerance stack-ups, and a solid understanding of machining, forming, joining, and heat treatment.
Strong knowledge of machine elements: bearings, seals, couplings, bolted joints, keys and splines, interference fits.
Capability to guide internal teams and coordinate with external engineering service providers.
Experience designing turbomachinery or other high-speed, high-temperature rotating equipment.
Leadership experience as a team leader or group manager in Mechanical Design.
3D tolerance-analysis tools (such as CETOL or 3DCS), and design for additive manufacturing.
Experience working directly with suppliers, from the RFQ stage through to first article inspection.
For the advanced level: 6+ years designing turbomachinery or large rotating equipment. You own complete modules and their interfaces, and check other people's drawings.
For the senior level: 12+ years. As design authority, you set design standards and drawing practice, and lead the layout of new product variants.
At Coolbrook, we are passionate about building teams where unique perspectives and backgrounds are valued and where everyone feels equally included.
If this resonates with you, we are looking forward to receiving your application.

Coolbrook is a transformational technology and engineering company on a mission to decarbonize major industrial sectors: petrochemicals and chemicals, iron and steel, and cement. Our RotoDynamic™ technology combines space science, turbomachinery, and chemical engineering to replace the burning of fossil fuels in high-temperature industrial processes with electricity.
The technology has two main applications: the RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH™), which provides carbon-free process heat for iron and steel, cement, and chemicals production, and the RotoDynamic Reactor™ (RDR™), which enables 100% CO2-free olefin production. Implemented at scale, RotoDynamic technology can reach temperatures of up to 1,700 °C and cut 2.4 billion tons (30%) of annual CO2 emissions in heavy industry.
Coolbrook was named winner of the Technologies of Change – Pioneering Decarbonization award at the Reuters Events: Global Energy Awards 2026, listed on the Global Cleantech 100 in both 2025 and 2026, and recognized as a 2025 BNEF Pioneer by BloombergNEF. Our international team works in Finland, the UK, the Netherlands, and India. Learn more at www.coolbrook.com.
