Job summary

Zalando GmbH in Helsinki is seeking a Backend Engineer to join the Digital Experience Composition Platform team. You will design, build and operate high-quality Tier 1 services with a Scala/JVM focus, collaborating with fellow engineers in Helsinki and beyond.

You’ll work in a hybrid setup, contribute to RESTful APIs, and have opportunities to influence content selection for millions of Zalando customers across Europe. Strong testing, teamwork and a willingness to learn are valued.

Qualifications

• Solid production knowledge of functional and/or JVM languages, ideally with Scala.
• Experience with designing and building high-traffic RESTful APIs.
• Nice to have microservices, AWS and frontend technologies experience.

The Digital Experience Composition Platform team is the gateway to relevant content selection at Zalando. The team directly impacts on what our 30+ million active customers see during their visit at our Fashion Store (e.g.: www.zalando.fi ). Their aim is to provide the most relevant, engaging user experience for each customer. We do this by combining Machine Learning driven personalization and business driven systems driving content selection decisions. As we are responsible for choosing the content our customers engage with, even one line of code can have a huge impact for our millions of customers.

As a Backend Engineer in this team, you will be working on high-quality cutting edge Tier 1 key services. You will drive discovery, design and development for our new initiatives and collaborate with our stakeholders and downstreams. You have the option to contribute to our frontend components. In this role you are supported by an experienced and engaged team of 6 engineers, which is one of the most active and respected communities at Zalando Helsinki. We not only run critical systems with ruthless efficiency, but also actively meet during free time to go hiking, play frisbee golf, go climbing, play games or do other activities together.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

Full development cycle: Discovery, design, develop, deploy, operate, monitor and improve important software solutions that impact millions of customers

Get onboard our tech stack of Scala, Finch, React, Dynamo DB, Redis, Postgre SQL and Kubernetes.

Participate in planning, writing TDDs, code reviews and our lean rituals

Collaborate with many teams across different locations

Work together with product management to clarify contribution to company initiatives

Together with your peers, represent the team when reacting to incoming requests, mail and chat communications

You have hunger and ability to learn new skills

Solid production knowledge of functional and/or JVM languages, ideally with Scala but we are also happy to teach it as long as you are interested in learning

Experience with specifying and building high traffic production RESTful APIs

Strong team player who likes to learn from peers, have a fun loving attitude and have the drive to grow others

You will get extra points from experience with microservices, AWS and frontend technologies, but these skills are not a must
