Job summary

Aiven in Helsinki is seeking a Backend Engineer to join our ClickHouse team. You’ll build and operate infrastructure for our managed ClickHouse service, writing Python in an async-first codebase and contributing to a robust CI/CD pipeline.

You'll work on database lifecycle orchestration, investigate production issues across Python and Linux, and collaborate with a small team to shape the roadmap. Prior ClickHouse or Linux expertise is a plus; strong backend fundamentals are essential.

Qualifications

• Solid Python development skills with asynchronous patterns (asyncio).
• Strong understanding of relational and analytical databases.
• CI/CD experience building and maintaining delivery pipelines.
• Familiarity with automated testing (unit, integration, system).
• Experience with AI coding tools in your workflow.
• Distributed systems awareness for multi-node deployments.
• Fluent English – written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain Python backend services that manage the ClickHouse service lifecycle.
• Work with CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite, GitHub Actions) to ship code reliably and often.
• Investigate and resolve production issues across the stack – Python to Linux behavior.
• Contribute to technical planning within a small team shaping the roadmap.
• Write well-tested, type-checked code and participate in code reviews.
• Use AI coding tools as part of daily workflow.
