Job description

Sweco is looking for an archaeologist to work on diverse tasks and projects for the architecture, land use, and landscape division. In the Land Use Cultural History team, we operate in various zoning and construction projects, rail projects, and the energy transition. Our plans and reports contribute to urban development and land use.

Your role at Sweco:

As an archaeologist, your duties include archaeological and other cultural environment surveys related to land use and zoning, cooperation with authorities, and interaction between different design fields. We are looking for an archaeologist with good field skills; ideally, you are at home both interpreting Stone Age environments during inventory and analyzing the stratigraphy of urban excavations. We will tailor the exact job description according to your expertise and interests. We support your development on your career path according to your strengths and interests and offer the opportunity to expand your expertise as a versatile expert. With us, as an archaeologist, you are involved in influencing future environments in many ways, for example by assessing the effects of construction, energy transition, and infrastructure projects on archaeological cultural heritage, promoting knowledge of cultural heritage, and coordinating different needs and goals. Being faced with something new inspires us, and hopefully you too! The employment is permanent and full-time.

Succeeding together:

In our land use teams, tasks vary from broad land use strategies and general plans to more detailed detailed plans, plans and reports supporting the clean transition, and interactive urban planning. We form a unit of just over 45 people, including experts in land use and cultural history. Multidisciplinary work is our daily routine and challenges do not have to be solved alone - you have the expert support network of our large organization available throughout Finland and across industry boundaries. If you wish, you can also participate in our international projects and work together with experts from other Sweco countries. In the architecture, landscape, and land use division, we operate in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, Lahti, Kokkola, Kuopio, Jyväskylä, Joensuu, Oulu, and Kajaani. We work according to a hybrid work model, flexibly combining office and remote work. We are looking for an archaeologist especially for southern Finland (primarily Helsinki/Tampere/Turku), but projects may also be located further north.

What we promise you:

Transforming society together. If you feel that you want to have a bigger impact, this is your chance. With us, you are involved in creating the cities of the future and a more sustainable society – you influence socially significant and locally important projects. Curious, brave, and encouraging work community. You are part of an uncomplicated and enthusiastic community where immediacy and respect for each other are emphasized. We have diverse expertise for every situation within the house, so support for problem situations is always available: we share expertise and solve things together. Career and learning opportunities are guaranteed. You can plan your own career and in this, we listen specifically to you. Diverse training opportunities are offered by our own Sweco Academy. When things happen in everyday life, we are flexible. Work and other life sometimes require adjustment. Good work-life experiences are alpha and omega for us. We work where it makes the most sense – gladly also meeting each other at the office. Diverse and comprehensive personnel benefits are not made up; you influence their content yourself.

Keys to success in the position:
  • You will succeed best in this position if you have already accumulated about 2-3 years of work experience and expertise in archaeological field work, especially archaeological inventories and research excavations.
  • You also have strong geospatial expertise (primarily qgis).
  • In terms of educational background, you are a Master of Arts or a Bachelor of Arts in archaeology.
  • You have fluent oral and written Finnish language skills; Swedish language skills are considered an advantage.
  • You have a willingness to travel and the ability to do field work independently across Finland.
  • A B-driver's license is required for the position.
  • You can grasp broad entities and reconcile the views of internal and external stakeholders.
  • You take action and move things forward smoothly in a good spirit and in a solution-oriented manner.
  • You have also received good feedback on your communication and interaction skills.
  • And because we are creating something new, you also want to learn and develop your professional expertise.
