Turbomachinery Mechanical Design Engineer

Hybrid (08040, Barcelona, Spain) – Mechanical

About Pangea Propulsion

We are a company dedicated to developing advanced propulsion systems for the space industry based on three key principles: high efficiency, sustainability, and reusability. We are revolutionizing the space industry with ground breaking innovations that allow us to offer the best performance to cost propulsion systems.

Our goal is to be the propulsion provider for the next generation of spacecraft, essential to meet the demands and compete in the booming space market of the next decade.

We are a passionate, multicultural, and multidisciplinary team pushing the boundaries of what is possible in space propulsion technology.

We have already made history by successfully testing the world's first 3D printed Methalox Aerospike engine, marking a significant milestone for the space industry.

We are looking for talented professionals to join our international team in Barcelona and Toulouse. We want to be a key player in improving diversity in the aerospace sector as in Pangea, we believe that diversity (gender, age, race, sexual orientation, beliefs, disability, culture, etc.) is a key to success. Within Pangea, everyone can grow with the same opportunities. We encourage you to apply. Individually we are different, but together we are an amazing team!

About the role

This role will have you directly impacting the design and development of Pangea’s aerospike engine, in addition to the greater catalogue of advanced rocket engines that Pangea is developing. You will be directly responsible for the development of components and subsystems capable of operating at extreme conditions, using advanced manufacturing techniques.

The position offers and requires leadership, creativity, innovation, and autonomy, as you will be directly responsible for a critical subsystem of some of the most advanced and powerful rocket engines currently under development in Europe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop rocket engine turbopump components, including pumps, turbine rotors, casings, seals, and bearings, with a focus on performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Lead the creation of detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and GD&T‑compliant documentation using CAD tools (preferably Siemens NX).

  • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including design justifications, technical specifications, and assembly procedures.

  • Collaborate with fluidic engineers and analysts to iterate and improve designs based on test and simulation feedback.

  • Work with suppliers and the internal manufacturing team to ensure DfM compliance and component quality for both traditional and additive manufacturing methods.

  • Analyze test and simulation data to validate mechanical integrity and structural performance under thermomechanical loading.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of turbomachinery design practices and standards within the organization.

What you need to be successful

  • Educational Background: BSc in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience: 5+ years of mechanical design experience in aerospace, turbomachinery, or other rotating equipment industries.

Technical Proficiency

  • Proficient in 3D CAD design (Siemens NX preferred) and capable of working with complex assemblies.

  • Familiarity with PLM tools (preferably Teamcenter).

  • Experience with ISO GPS standards and generation of detailed, production‑ready design drawings.

  • Solid understanding of thermomechanical loading, stress analysis, and rotor dynamics.

  • Familiarity with DfM principles for both conventional and additive manufacturing processes.

  • Working proficiency in English (Spanish and French is a plus).

Soft Skills

  • Curiosity, creativity, and a passion for advanced propulsion technologies.

  • Analytical mindset with strong problem‑solving abilities.

  • Autonomy and ownership in delivering results under tight timelines.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills in multidisciplinary environments.

Other desired competencies

  • Advanced Education: MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Industry Experience: Background in rocket turbomachinery systems or liquid rocket engine components.

  • Specialized Expertise: Experience with FEM tools (Ansys or Abaqus preferred) for static and dynamic analysis; programming and automation (Python or MATLAB preferred); knowledge of bearing and seal design principles for high‑speed rotating machinery; experience with combustion systems or rocket engine cycles; familiarity with aerospace standards for rotating or pressurized components.
