Job summary

Parser is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (Java) to join a strategic area of our systems. You will drive architecture, champion engineering standards, and deliver high-scale services with asynchronous messaging and low latency. You’ll work within lean teams and harness AI tools to enhance productivity and quality.

You will shape decisions end-to-end, own core technical standards, and align priorities with business goals while mentoring others and ensuring robust delivery across platforms.

We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (Java) to join a strategic part of our system. This role is for an experienced engineer with deep technical insight into asynchronous messaging, low-latency architecture, high-scale systems, and design-pattern rationale—moving well beyond broad tool exposure — and the courage to make an impact and help over 28 million UK shoppers every week, with global reach on the horizon.

In this role, you will bring your ideas, shape decisions end-to-end, drive core technical standards, and adapt quickly to evolving system priorities. You will work within lean, high-performing teams, leveraging cutting-edge Agentic AI tools to maintain exceptional standards in engineering delivery.

Your key responsibilities:

• System Architecture & Engineering: Architect, build, and optimise microservices and distributed systems for mission-critical services.
• Holistic Technical Leadership: Influence decisions across several software initiatives, establishing clear design-pattern rationale and technical quality standards.
• Performance & Messaging Optimisation: Apply deep expertise in asynchronous messaging, event-driven architectures, and latency management to achieve high throughput and reliability.
• AI-Augmented Development: Utilise modern Agentic AI platforms (such as Tab 9 and Gemini) to streamline developer workflows and maintain lean team efficiency.

What you’ll bring to the role:

• Core Language: Java (deep core fluency, modern functional idioms, and performance patterns), Spring Boot, Vert.x and RxJava
• Messaging & Streaming: Apache Kafka (async messaging, event-driven architecture, latency considerations)
• Databases: SQL and NoSQL platforms (PostgreSQL, Couchbase)
• Cloud & Infrastructure: Azure (preferred, or AWS), Kubernetes (container orchestration, microservices deployment)
• Developer Productivity: Hands-on experience or adaptability with Agentic AI tooling (Tab 9, Gemini)
