Monzo is hiring a Staff Data Scientist to shape data strategy across core domains, combining deep technical work with business impact. This senior IC role blends hands-on modelling in SQL/Python with strategic influence across product, engineering and risk.
The position offers London or Barcelona placement, with UK distributed work options, visa sponsorship, relocation support, and a generous salary (£124,400–£165,000) plus performance incentives and benefits.
Seniority & Market Positioning: The Staff Data Scientist title sits above Senior and below Principal/Distinguished in most tech ladders. At £124,400–£165,000, this is competitive for UK fintech — market benchmarks for Staff DS roles in London typically range £110k–£160k, placing Monzo at or above the 75th percentile, plus performance incentives on top.
Skills You'll Build:
Career Trajectory: This role is a strong platform for moving into Head of Data Science, Principal DS, or VP of Analytics within 3–5 years. Monzo's scale (11M+ customers, rapid growth) means high-impact, real-world problems — not toy datasets.
Green Flags:
Watch For: As a Staff IC role at a scale-up, there's inherent ambiguity and cross-team complexity. The expectation to both lead strategy and remain hands-on with SQL/Python is demanding — ensure you're comfortable operating at both levels simultaneously.
