Nalanda Global in Madrid, Spain, is seeking a Sr Java Backend Engineer to design and evolve scalable backend architecture using Java and Spring Boot. You will join a product engineering team that leverages AI-powered tooling and modern development practices to deliver robust services.

You will own complex backend domains, drive technical initiatives, mentor peers, and help raise the team’s performance, reliability, and operational excellence across the platform.

Formación

• Solid experience with Java and Spring Boot, including the wider Spring ecosystem.
• A good grasp of backend architecture, distributed systems, concurrency and scalability patterns.
• Experience with SQL databases (PostgreSQL ideally).
• Comfortable designing and consuming REST APIs, with sensible error handling, versioning and documentation.
• A habitual testing practice — unit and integration tests (JUnit).
• Working knowledge of Git, CI/CD pipelines and Docker.
• Willingness and ability to mentor others and raise the technical quality of the team.
• Strong communication and decision-making skills.

Responsabilidades

• Own complex technical problems end to end — from design through to production.
• Lead the design of scalable solutions and contribute to architecture decisions across databases, caching, messaging and distributed systems.
• Optimise services for performance, scalability, security and fault tolerance.
• Set the bar for code quality, testing, observability and documentation.
• Keep production healthy: incident resolution, root-cause analysis, and identifying opportunities for refactoring and technical debt reduction.
• Use AI-powered development tools to improve delivery speed, code quality and team productivity.

Role Summary

We are looking for a Sr Java Backend Engineer who will play a key role in designing and evolving our backend architecture, ensuring our systems are scalable, maintainable, and robust. You will join a product engineering team that works with modern development practices, AI-powered tooling, and a fast-evolving engineering culture.

In this role, you’re expected to take ownership of complex backend domains, drive technical initiatives, and make informed architectural decisions. You will mentor and support other engineers, influence engineering standards, and contribute to improving performance, reliability, and operational excellence across the platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain backend services, APIs and core platform components using Java and Spring Boot.
• Own complex technical problems end to end — from design through to production.
• Lead the design of scalable solutions and contribute to architecture decisions across databases, caching, messaging and distributed systems.
• Optimise services for performance, scalability, security and fault tolerance.
• Set the bar for code quality, testing, observability and documentation.

Qualifications

• Observability stacks (Dynatrace, OpenTelemetry).

Competitive compensation package, with a salary range of €50,000 – €60,000 gross per year, depending on experience and fit.
