Job summary

ESA invites internship applicants for ESAC near Madrid to explore future-proof access to Gaia’s data. The project aims to convert the MDB GBin data into durable, language-independent formats and develop prototype tools in collaboration with Gaia experts across Europe.

The role requires a solid background in computer science or data science, and programming in Python/Java, with interest in large-scale data processing and data formats such as Parquet, HDF5, or Zarr.

Qualifications

• You must be a university student, preferably in your final or second-to-last year of a Master’s degree.
• Must be enrolled at your university for the entire duration of the internship.
• You should have strong programming skills in Python and/or Java.

Responsibilities

• Investigate and compare approaches for converting the MDB GBin data into modern formats.
• Develop prototype conversion and validation tools.
• Collaborate with Gaia mission and data-processing experts across Europe.
