Job description

At TomTom, we are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Maps Data Services team. In this role, you will help build the services and infrastructure that enable TomTom teams and customers to access the data they need to build and update maps.

Beyond technical expertise, we are looking for someone with a business-oriented mindset who can think from the customer’s perspective. You are curious, eager to learn, and open to developing new skills as our platform evolves. In our team, attitude and willingness to grow, and a collaborative mindset are just as important as existing experience.

So, if you enjoy working in a collaborative environment, expanding your skill set, and contributing to meaningful, data-driven solutions, we would love to hear from you.

What you will do:
  • Build and evolve backend services and infrastructure for the Maps Data Services. You will work on designing and delivering new features that extend the platform’s capabilities.
  • Develop reliable solutions that help internal teams find and use map data. These data are also used by customer-facing teams when they onboard external customers.
  • Improve the performance, cost efficiency, and throughput of services that process large volumes of data.
  • Contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and solution design to implementation, testing, deployment and monitoring.
  • Operate and continuously improve production systems.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Madrid, Lodz, Amsterdam and Ghent, sharing ownership and knowledge across the team.
What you will need:
  • Strong professional software engineering experience, with Java as your main programming language.
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining scalable backend services in production.
  • Solid computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms and complexity analysis.
  • A practical approach to troubleshooting, performance and reliability in complex systems.
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication in English.
  • An interest in using AI tools to improve software engineering and delivery.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and DevOps is a plus.
  • You already live in Madrid or in a nearby area and are willing to commute to our office 2 days/week.
