Verisure in Madrid is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to shape the backend platform using Java, Spring Boot and MongoDB. You will own design and delivery of robust services and help drive best practices across the team.

You will mentor colleagues, collaborate with product and QA, and contribute to AI-enabled engineering initiatives while growing toward a Technical Lead role in a dynamic, international tech organisation.

Senior Software Engineer – Backend (Java)

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play an important role in the development and evolution of our backend solutions, working primarily with Java, Spring Boot and MongoDB.

You will become a key technical reference within your team, contributing not only through your development expertise but also by helping establish best practices, mentoring colleagues and driving continuous improvement.

Working closely with Product Owners, developers, QA engineers and other stakeholders, you will help translate business needs into reliable, scalable and maintainable technical solutions.

The team operates in an Agile environment and supports business-critical initiatives, including development and transformation projects connected to our marketing capabilities. With a dynamic roadmap and evolving business priorities, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of challenges while contributing to our ongoing journey of technological innovation, including the adoption of AI-driven development tools.

For someone with the right ambition, this position also offers an exciting opportunity to grow into a Technical Lead role, taking increasing responsibility for technical direction, ways of working and knowledge sharing within the team.

What you'll do

• Design, develop and maintain robust, scalable backend services and applications using Java, Spring Boot and MongoDB.
• Take ownership of technical solutions throughout the development lifecycle, from initial design and implementation to deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement.
• Act as a technical reference for the team, contributing to architectural discussions, development standards and technical decision-making.
• Collaborate closely with Product Owners, engineers and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
• Mentor and support fellow developers, sharing knowledge, encouraging collaboration and helping the team continuously improve.
• Design and develop APIs and integrations between different applications, services and systems.
• Promote high standards of software quality through code reviews, automated testing, performance optimisation and sound engineering practices.
• Contribute to the improvement of development processes, CI/CD practices, system reliability and technical debt management.
• Explore and embrace new technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, to improve engineering efficiency and ways of working.
• Adapt to evolving business priorities while maintaining a structured, solution-oriented approach to delivery.

We believe you bring:

• Extensive professional experience in backend software development, ideally within complex, distributed systems.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
• Solid experience working with MongoDB, including database design, data modelling and performance optimisation.
• Experience designing, developing and integrating RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Good understanding of software architecture, engineering best practices, automated testing and CI/CD processes.
• Experience working in Agile development environments, such as Scrum.
• The ability to take technical ownership, solve complex problems and contribute to technical decision-making.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams and with different stakeholders.
• A genuine interest in mentoring others, sharing knowledge and contributing to a positive, high-performing engineering culture.
• Professional proficiency in English and Spanish.

It would be great if you also have:

• Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS or GCP.
• Familiarity with frontend technologies such as Angular.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools or an interest in exploring AI agents and their applications throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Previous experience acting as a technical mentor, senior technical reference or informal team lead.
