Senior Safety Design and Engineering Manager, Safety Engineering (EU & Rest of World) – At Amazon, we are building the most customer-centric company on earth. This role supports the Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) mission by providing tools, resources, and environments that encourage safe, efficient, and healthy behaviors, and proactive health and wellbeing management. The successful candidate will lead safety design and engineering for projects across Europe, ensuring high safety standards are integrated into systems and processes in new and legacy Fulfilment Centres, Sort Centres, and Delivery Stations. The role requires deep EU safety knowledge, cross-functional collaboration, data-driven decision making, and effective communication of safety requirements across teams.
Location: Mix of site and office work with frequent travel up to approximately 60–70% of the time. A driving license with experience in the UK and Continental Europe is highly desirable.
Responsibilities and accountabilities include acting as the lead WHS technical expert, guiding procurement, facilitating design processes for compliance, leading proactive safety initiatives, and developing and implementing comprehensive safety programs. The role also involves mentoring team members, contributing to change management, and providing expert input to EU WHS projects and real estate initiatives.
It is desirable that the candidate has technical knowledge of EU machinery safety standards and regulations, robotics, and automated conveyors to meet European requirements and lead procurement and implementation across the network.

Key job responsibilities
- Define new and update existing technical standards for and process controls, working closely with EU internal experts.
- Generate regular technical updates for the Safety Engineering team on latest safety regulations, standards (ISO, IEC, EN) and emerging technologies to stay compliant and current with best practices.
- Identify industry innovations for new, safer risk reduction measures, inspection techniques, tools, and opportunities to improve performance while reducing impact on time and cost.
- Lead the WHS technical voice during project development to ensure compliance with Amazon standards and regulatory requirements, including leading safety technical reviews and risk assessments for all new equipment systems.
- Support Amazon facilities by performing suitable and sufficient risk assessments of relevant new projects, mentoring and developing other team members accordingly.
- Conduct site WHS assessments, create punch lists, and review corrective actions with relevant teams to mitigate risk to an acceptable level.
- Keep tracking data up to date for the inspection program.
- Provide functional links with other critical teams including Engineering, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering, Procurement, Operations, New Build Safety, and Real Estate.
- Support procurement processes, building design, specification, and launch processes to ensure right-first-time safety outcomes.
- Provide monthly reports on upcoming projects and current schemes with clear analytical measures of status and risk.
- Support development of solutions that meet Amazon safety standards for risk reduction, customer satisfaction, efficiency, scalability, simplicity, and operational excellence.
- Instruct and train company personnel on safety policies and help teams implement safety standards at their sites.
- Provide awareness and targeted training on building, systems, or machinery safety and engineering risk reduction to influence strategic decisions and day-to-day operations.
- Support business change through effective influencing of change management in international operations, providing expert input to change projects, and acting as a technical expert for the EU WHS team.
- Support the delivery of central Health and Safety proactive objectives and escalate significant concerns and lessons learned from inspections and site visits.
- Plan and arrange own travel with frugality and efficiency.
- Demonstrate knowledge of EU machinery safety standards, robotics, and automated conveyors to meet various European country requirements, and lead procurement and implementation accordingly.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications at an advanced level.
- A Bachelor degree or equivalent level of qualification in line with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).
- Extensive experience in Safety Engineering risk management, focusing on machinery safety to EU standards and directives.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
- Experience leveraging technology and implementing lean principles / Six Sigma methodologies to drive process improvements or equivalent.
- Master’s degree or equivalent.
- CMSE – Certified Machinery Explorer (note: ensure correct acronym in system).
- FS Engineer – Functional Safety Engineer (IEC 61508 etc).
