Afori is building the AI layer for insurance brokers, with a hands-on, production-focused role in Barcelona. You will own backend systems and build AI agents that automate broker back-office tasks, collaborating closely with the founders and the AI/ML teams.

You will work in a hybrid setup, four days in the Barcelona office and one day from home, shaping the future of insurance through practical, scalable engineering and data-driven decision-making.

Formación

• 5+ years building backend systems in NodeJS and Typescript.
• Strong cloud-native architecture experience and Docker.
• Experience with RESTful APIs and relational databases (PostgreSQL).
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) is a plus.
• Experience with AI/ML pipelines and LLM-driven workflows is a strong plus.
• Ability to work hands-on next to founders to ship code.

About Us

Afori's vision is to ensure every human has the right cover at the right time. Our founders previously built insurance unicorn wefox and are now building the AI layer for insurance brokers: agents that plug directly into brokers' daily workflows and take over the back-office work that eats more than 60% of their time. We already save brokers over 2.5 hours a day, freeing them up to do what actually grows the business: advising customers well.

The opportunity is massive: the global protection gap is €1.3 trillion, and insurance distribution still runs on manual processes. Sequoia recently mapped AI-native services opportunities and ranked insurance brokerage first, a $140-200B market. We raised a €4M pre-seed led by General Catalyst, backed by investors and operators including Mustafa Suleyman (CEO, Microsoft AI) and Alex Rinke (Co-CEO, Celonis).

Who this role is for

We want someone who has already built a product from nothing and stayed to run it in production. An ex-founder, a former CTO, or a lead engineer. You've made the important calls with no one above you to catch your mistakes.

Now you want to build again. Not run a company, not manage a team, just point everything you've learned at a hard problem. Ours is the AI agents at the core of the product. It's the hardest problem we have, and we want you to own it.

You'd work next to the founders, with the freedom to decide how things get built. This is a hands-on job on purpose. The most useful thing you can do here is write code.

Your Impact

You'll build AI agents that feed our context layer. At Afori, we want to deeply understand our customers and the risks they're exposed to by extracting and synthesizing structured and unstructured data points from multiple channels. You'll design new methodologies for data extraction and context engineering so our agents can advise and serve our customers in the best possible way.

Key Responsibilities:

• System Architecture: Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems for AI agent orchestration and real-time data processing.
• Build AI agents: Take full ownership in building new AI agents that take over backoffice work on behalf of the broker
• AI/ML Collaboration: Partner with AI/ML teams to deploy models into production (e.g., customer insights, task automation).
• Performance Optimization: Optimize APIs and microservices for speed, security, and simplicity.
• Problem-Solving: Tackle complex challenges in data integration, workflow automation, and system reliability.
• Collaboration: Being honest in code reviews and design talks, and keeping the bar high.
• Customer focus: Working with the business side so what you build actually solves what brokers struggle with.

What We’re Looking For

Technical Skills:

• 5+ years building backend systems in NodeJS & Typescript.
• Expertise in cloud-native architectures (AWS/Azure) & Docker.
• Strong experience with RAG creation & management, context engineering and agentic memory creation
• Strong RESTful API design experience.
• Proficiency with relational (PostgreSQL) and distributed systems.
• Experience in Kubernetes & Infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) is a plus.
• Experience with AI/ML pipelines (model deployment, MLOps) is a strong plus.
• Familiarity building with LLMs / agentic workflows would be a plus.
