Job summary

Parser Limited in Spain is seeking an experienced Python Backend Engineer to join a client delivery team focused on search for a large multinational retailer. You will design and implement backend services and APIs that power quality tooling and relevance measurement.

You will collaborate with AI, data, and DevOps engineers to ship production-ready features, refactor tooling for CI/CD, and ensure reliability, security, and scalability across the data platform and client integrations.

How will you impact?

We are looking for an experienced Python Backend Engineer to join a client delivery teamworking on Search with one of the largest multinational retail companies, primarily known as asupermarket chain.

The client operates in multiple countries, including the UK, Ireland, andparts of Europe and Asia, and sells groceries, clothing, electronics, and other consumer goods,both in physical stores and online. It also offers financial services, mobile phone services, andfuel stations.

You will build the backend services behind tools that help Search teams find problems, test changes and measure relevance more quickly, working alongside AI, data and DevOps engineers.

Your key responsibilities:

• Design and build Python backend services and APIs for search quality tooling,including a tool for collecting human relevance judgements
• Review and refactor the existing offline evaluation tool so that it can be deployed and run on demand in the CI/CD pipeline
• Translate product requirements into well-structured, maintainable, test-driven code
• Integrate services with the shared data platform, existing client APIs and search infrastructure
• Support AI and LLM-enabled features alongside AI engineers, including automated checks on accuracy and reliability
• Work with product, design, data science and Search colleagues to turn prototypes into production releases
• Support production systems, resolve incidents, and document decisions and trade-offs

How you’ll work

• Share work early through documentation, demonstrations and incremental pull requests
• Own deliverables within agreed architecture and engineering practices, and communicate decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly
• Work closely with Search and data science colleagues to understand how the tools are used
• Experiment quickly, test assumptions against real data and iterate using evidence
• Balance exploration with delivery, and avoid unnecessary complexity early on
• Design for reliability, clarity and adoption by the people who use the tools
• Make sensible trade-offs to deliver usable value early, and build solutions that can evolve

What you'll bring to the role:

Backend engineering:

• Strong Python skills, including building maintainable production services and REST APIs
• Experience reviewing, refactoring and productionising existing code so that it runs reliably in a pipeline
• Good testing discipline across application and data components, including test-driven development
• Understanding of clean design principles such as SOLID

Platform and delivery

• Experience with CI/CD, version control and containerisation, ideally with on-demand or temporary environments
• Experience with a major cloud platform, ideally Microsoft Azure
• Understanding of security, scalability and observability for production services

Data and integration

• Proficiency with both SQL and NoSQL databases
• Experience integrating services with data pipelines, APIs and existing applications AI awareness
• Exposure to integrating LLM-based or other AI features into backend services, including validation of model outputs

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional experience in backend or software engineering
• Proven ability to ship iterative, user-focused solutions with appropriate attention to reliability and security
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• A collaborative approach to multidisciplinary product delivery

Nice to have

• Experience in retail or ecommerce search, or with Elasticsearch or another production search platform
• Familiarity with offline evaluation, A/B testing or ranking metrics such as nDCG
• Experience with event streaming (for example Kafka) or medallion-style data pipelines
• Experience building internal tools for rating or annotation
