ING Hubs Spain is seeking an IT Lead in Madrid to grow and shape ING's Private Cloud platform and engineering culture. You will combine people leadership with technical guidance, supporting a chapter of engineers and enabling personal and professional growth.

You will spend time on strategic initiatives, hands‑on engineering, and collaborating with product and other leads, while mentoring peers and ensuring architectural alignment across services.

Your role and work environment:

We are looking for a IT Lead in Madrid to help grow and develop our engineering team in Madrid, while shaping the future of ING's Private Cloud platform.

The team

The Private Cloud (IPC) area is a key part of ING's technology strategy and provides the foundational platforms and services that enable engineers across the bank to build, deploy and operate their applications securely and efficiently.

Our teams develop and operate a broad range of infrastructure and platform capabilities, including self-service cloud provisioning, automation, networking, database platform services, container platform services, observability and engineering enablement. We serve thousands of engineers globally and support critical services used throughout ING.

The organisation is highly international, with engineers and leaders working together from several countries across Europe and beyond. We are currently growing the engineering team in Spain, as part of our Hubs sourcing strategy. Collaboration, continuous learning and engineering excellence are at the heart of how we work.

Your key responsibilities:

As a Lead, you combine people leadership with technical leadership. Your primary focus is helping engineers grow, building a strong engineering culture and ensuring the chapter has the capabilities required to achieve its objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

• Lead, coach and develop a chapter of 5-15 engineers, supporting both their personal and professional growth. The number of engineers will grow over time, as we grow our engineering team in Madrid.
• Create an engaging, inclusive and high-performing work environment where people can thrive.
• Drive capability building, knowledge sharing and engineering excellence across the chapter.
• Partner closely with Product Managers and fellow Chapter Leads to ensure the right skills and talent are available to achieve business objectives.
• Contribute to the strategic direction of the tribe and help continuously improve our ways of working.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, succession planning and talent development activities.
• Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
• Act as a role model for ING values and engineering craftsmanship.
• Spend part of your time contributing directly to strategic initiatives, transformation efforts or hands‑on engineering work, depending on your background and expertise.
• Although your primary responsibility is people leadership, having hands‑on experience with database products (e.g. Oracle or Cassandra or Postgres) will help you support engineers, challenge technical decisions and contribute to the future direction of our services.

• Technical education, preferably in Information Technology
• 10+ years of technical background in IT infrastructure.
• High level of English is a must (C1)
• Good communication skills, you will build relationships all over ING, diplomacy, and being a sparring partner for our consumers and tech colleagues.
• Coaching mentality, putting the learning of others first.
• Proactive attitude, always on the lookout for improving your and our way of working.
• You are easy to get along with and enjoy collaborating with others.
• A strong understanding of Agile‑Scrum methodology is considered positive.
• A focus on servicing and helping our consumers, while staying strict on not creating technical debt / specials.
• Experience of working in a large corporate’s IT infrastructure department.
• It is a strong benefit if you have several years of demonstrable experience as a lead. This can be as a lead engineer, project leader or hierarchical lead.
