OFFER DESCRIPTION

1. Research Group:

The selected candidate will join the ICCRAM-EST group (Environment, Sustainability and Toxicology).

Specifically, the position is required for theEnvironmental Biotechnology Research Line. Principal Researcher: Dr. Rocío Barros García.

ICCRAM-EST research group is a multidisciplynary group at ICCRAM centre of the University of Burgos. The groups is focused on different research fields including sustainability, toxicology and soil health and soil remediation. The group is highly active in European funded projects (currently 15 EU projects on-going) and national collaborations, positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in the field of biotechnology and environmental science.

2. Research Field:

The position is within the Environmental Biotechnology research line, particularly in projects related to Soil Health and Remediation, including BIOREM, PHYBI and Phy2Shine projects.

The research line focuses on soil-related studies, particularly on soil health and remediation. It develops biotechnological and sustainable strategies to restore contaminated soils, enhance their ecological functionality, and promote long-term soil quality within the framework of environmental sustainability and circular economy principles. These projects are focused on the soil restoration through innovative microbiological, plant-based and biotechnological approaches, bringing in advanced tools (e.g., AI, systems biology) and coupling remediation/restoration with circular-economy valorisation of biomass.

2.2. Projects information:

  • The national project “PHY2SHINE – Microorganism-assisted phytoremediation for the removal of persistent organic pollutants: synergistic effect of soil–plant–microorganism biosystems,” funded by the Spanish State Research Agency. This project (April 2025–April 2027) investigates the synergistic role of soil, plants, and microorganisms in achieving phytoremediation of persistent organic pollutants in soils. University of Burgos.
  • The BIOREM Project (2024–2028) under the Horizon MSCA scheme, led by UBU, which pursues “Systems Biology, Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Biotechnology Approaches to Improve Soil Bioremediation.” The project brings together research centres and industry to create multidisciplinary tools (including AI) that advance soil-remediation technologies. www.bioremproject.eu
  • The pHYBi Project (October 2024–September 2028), funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe JU, which integrates phytomanagement of polluted/marginal soils with the valorisation of the resulting lignocellulosic biomass for the bio-based textile industry. The project combines remediation of degraded or contaminated land with circular-economy use of the biomass produced.

3. Requirements:

Minimun requirement:PhD in Soil Biology, Microbiology, Plant Science, Biochemistry, Agricultural Science, Environmental Sciences or related fields.

  • English: Good level of speaking, writing, and reading.

We are looking for ambitious researcher with the following skills:

  • Expert in in soil microbiome: Strong expertise in soil microbiome research, including the characterization of microbial community structure and function using molecular and bioinformatic techniques.
  • Experienced in assessing soil health indicators such as nutrient cycling, organic matter content, enzymatic activity, and soil fertility, to evaluate ecosystem functionality.
  • Experience in the field of plant-microbe-soil interaction. Knowledge in molecular biology, microbial culture techniques and plant scince.
  • Knowledge of analytical and characterization techniques, including HPLC, GC-MS, GC-FID, and ICP-MS for chemical and elemental analysis.
  • Knowledge in microscopy techniques and familiarity with advanced instrumentation such as flow cytometry, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).
  • Capacity for self-organization and tuition of students.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams. Proactive attitude, communication skills, autonomy and willingness to travel.

4. What we offer

  • The selected candidate will join the ICCRAM-EST group to actively participate in national and international projects.
  • Salary will be aligned with the minimum remuneration levels set for R2 and R3 at Universidad de Burgos, as specified in the official retributions document
  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary and international work environment.
  • Access to cutting-edge technology necessary to perform the research.
