Ongres developed StackGres, which isa powerful, open-source platform designed to make running enterprise-grade PostgreSQL on Kubernetes incredibly easy and efficient.

We are looking for a talented and experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, optimize, and maintain our PostgreSQL databases in a high-performance and mission-critical environment. You will work closely with teams across the organization to ensure database availability, performance, security, and scalability. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge in database tuning, backups, high availability, monitoring systems, and automation (especially with tools like Ansible). Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Kubernetes will be considered a valuable asset to this role.

You will manage PostgreSQL databases across multiple product lifecycle environments—from development to mission-critical production systems—while configuring and maintaining database servers and processes. This position is to work completely remote.

Key responsibilities

Installation

• Install and configure new database servers using best practices.
• Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR).
• Upgrade minor and major versions.

Backup and recovery

• Ensure all database servers are backed up.
• Perform restoration testing.

Database maintenance

• Define and implement maintenance plans for database systems.
• Standardize maintenance approaches across systems.
• Index and statistics maintenance.

Database monitoring

• Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve live database system issues.
• Capacity planning and forecasting.
• Creating and reviewing data access audits.
• Tracking and reporting on Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) metrics.

Performance Tuning

• Identification of queries having the largest performance impact.
• Improvements to indexes and execution plans.
• Troubleshoot transaction and concurrency issues.
• Assist developers with query optimization.

Documentation and training

• Create documentation on processes and procedures.
• Providing training for developers and other technical resources.

Data conversion

• Assist with data migrations between DBMS platforms.
• Participate in the on-call support rotation

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about database administration, proactive, a quick learner and a self-starter. Always focusing on the importance of protecting the customer data and environment.

Required Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field
• A minimum of 3-5 years of Postgres experience
• A minimum of 2-3 years of database administration experience
• A minimum of 1 year of experience performing or supporting application development

Additional Qualifications

• Containers or Kubernetes knowledge and experience is a plus
• Linux OS experience
• Programming language experience is a plus (Java, Python, shell, etc)
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
• Strong understanding of database structure and design principles
• Familiarity with database security principles
• Solid scripting skills including pl / pgsql scripting and stored procedures
• Familiarity with a variety of installation platforms including Linux, Cloud, and Cloud provider-managed instances
• Effective prioritization of tasks
• Successful time management
• Ability to work remotely but within a team structure
• Strong communication skills
• Language requirement : Fluency in English is a requirement, ability in spanish is also preferred but not required

A DBA in OnGres is like the guardian of an organization's most valuable digital asset : its data. Their day-to-day is a dynamic blend of proactive maintenance, reactive problem-solving, and strategic planning, ensuring that information flows smoothly and securely.

The morning often begins with a systematic health check. This involves reviewing automated alerts, checking logs for unusual activity, and monitoring database performance metrics like CPU usage, memory allocation, and disk I / O. Are there any slow-running queries? Is storage reaching critical levels? These early observations guide the day's priorities.

A significant portion of time is dedicated to performance tuning. This is a continuous quest for efficiency. They might analyze complex SQL queries to identify bottlenecks, create or modify indexes to speed up data retrieval, or adjust database configurations to optimize resource utilization. It's a bit like being a meticulous mechanic, always looking for ways to make the engine run smoother and faster.

Security is paramount. DBAs are constantly vigilant against unauthorized access and data breaches. This involves managing user permissions, implementing robust authentication mechanisms, applying security patches, and regularly auditing access logs.
