The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. The Science Directorate (SD) delivers high quality, high impact and highly relevant multidisciplinary science. Our People are diverse, talented, engaged and inspired to deliver innovative outcomes.

Surveillance and Laboratory Services (SLSD) performs testing in a number of areas for both diagnostic and surveillance purposes. The department plays a key role in delivering notifiable disease outbreak testing.

The purpose of the role is to manage the supply and production of a wide range of cell cultures and immunodiagnostic reagents to support statutory testing and research projects at APHA and for commercial sale.

Management
  • Provision of avian and mammalian primary cultures to APHA and commercial customers.
  • Provision of a wide range of cell lines to APHA customers to support diagnostic, surveillance and research work.
  • Provision of monoclonal antibodies, proteins and conjugates etc. to APHA and commercial customers.
  • Management of AO staff involved in above production methods. Develop annual training plan for staff to maintain staff competence. Ensure ad hoc monitoring of individuals working in the facility is carried out and recorded.
  • Liaise closely with staff in PSUR and Sales desk to ensure any queries or problems are dealt with effectively.
  • Provide professional advice to APHA and commercial customers.
  • Be proactive in liaising and collaborating with key stakeholders, including Defra, APHA regulatory authorities, manufacturers, suppliers, APHA contracts, APHA Safety, Health, and Wellbeing Dept. (SHaW), Facilities Management, and external customers.
  • Management of Integra stock management system.
  • Ensure accreditation and compliance to ISO 9001 and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
  • To ensure animal work complies with Home Office regulations.
  • Investigate new technologies to reduce use of animals in the preparation of primary cells.
  • Dealing with customer enquiries, complaints and non-conformance issues related to products.
  • Preparing reagents for use in the laboratory, ordering media and other consumables as required to ensure continuity of production.
  • Maintain the smooth running of the laboratory by ensuring room officer duties are completed, equipment is serviced and calibrated.
  • Procurement of laboratory supplies.
Safety
  • To manage facilities ensuring they are functional and compliant with APHA Safety Policies, Standards and Guidance to permit safe and effective delivery of work.
  • To instil the highest standards of safety within the laboratory ensuring that staff are fully aware of their responsibility to colleagues and themselves.
  • Ensure risk assessments are in place and reviewed yearly.
  • Ensure all work carried out within team complies with appropriate legislation e.g. Animal Scientific Procedures act (Home Office).
Quality
  • To ensure all work complies to ISO 9001 and GMP standards.
  • Assist with audits, investigate non-conforming work and prepare trouble shooting investigations.
  • Writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
