Job description

AESC is a global leader in lithium‑ion and LFP battery technology, with a fast‑growing footprint across Japan, the UK, France, China, and the USA. It is now expanding in Spain with a €1‑billion gigafactory in Extremadura that will create up to 900 direct jobs in phase one. The Spanish facility is designed as the first net‑zero industrial park gigafactory in the country, in line with AESC's mission to pioneer sustainable battery manufacturing.

Role Purpose

Are you a recent engineering graduate, or do you have your first 1–2 years in EHS, and want to grow in fire protection, explosion protection (ATEX) and process safety? As EHS Junior Engineer you will join the EHS team of AESC's new battery gigafactory in Navalmoral de la Mata from the design phase, through construction and commissioning, to the start of production. Working with and learning from senior EHS engineers, you will review drawings and design documents against European and Spanish regulations, follow up comments and corrective actions until they are closed, take part in risk assessments and follow the fire protection works on site. You will work every day with the Construction (GIC) team, Chinese and Spanish design institutes, fire/safety consultants and other AESC departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review EHS and fire protection drawings and design documents (fire compartmentation, evacuation routes, sprinklers, detection and alarm, emergency lighting and signage) against Spanish and EU regulations (RSCIEI, CTE DB-SI, RIPCI, UNE-EN) and AESC EHS standards.
  • Keep the comment and corrective-action register and follow up with designers and stakeholders until design freeze.
Explosion protection & process safety
  • Support ATEX hazardous area classification and help prepare and update the Explosion Protection Document (DPCE).
  • Take part in HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA studies and track their recommendations, including lithium-ion thermal runaway risks.
  • Support the EHS review of gas detection, thermal runaway monitoring, infrared cameras and other safety systems.
Construction & regulatory approval
  • Follow the fire protection installation works on site: material certificates, installation quality and system commissioning.
  • Help prepare the as-built documentation and support OCA inspections until final fire regulatory acceptance.
Qualifications
What we are looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Industrial, Chemical, Mechanical, Energy, Electrical or similar), Chemistry or Physics.
  • Recent graduate or up to 2 years of experience in EHS / PRL, fire protection, process safety or industrial engineering, including internships or a first job in an industrial plant, an engineering firm, a fire/safety consultancy or an OCA.
  • Able to read technical drawings (AutoCAD / PDF) and comfortable using Excel to keep comment and action-tracking registers.
  • English – B2 minimum (mandatory). Spanish – C1 or above, and Chinese – both a plus.
  • Based in Navalmoral de la Mata or within approximately 45 minutes by car, or willing to relocate. 100% on site, including construction site work.
  • Curious and quick to learn, rigorous and well organised (you follow actions through to closure), proactive and autonomous with guidance, able to communicate assertively with senior engineers and contractors, comfortable in international Chinese–Spanish teams, and with high ethical standards.
It's a plus if you have
  • A Master's in Health & Safety , Fire Protection or Process Safety, or a Máster Universitario en PRL (completed or in progress).
  • Training in fire protection or ATEX, or a TFG/TFM on fire safety, ATEX, process or battery safety.
  • NEBOSH, or ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 (Lead) Auditor training.
  • Some knowledge of Spanish OHS and fire/explosion regulations (Ley 31/1995, RD 39/1997, RD 486/1997, CAE – RD 171/2004, RD 1627/1997, RSCIEI, CTE DB-SI, RIPCI, RD 681/2003, Seveso III).
  • Basic understanding of ATEX zoning, HAZID / HAZOP / LOPA, fire and gas detection (UNE-EN 54), lithium-ion thermal runaway and the OCA inspection process.
  • Exposure to greenfield projects or construction sites, support on ATEX / DPCE, Seveso or fire protection projects, or experience in high‑risk industries (batteries, chemicals, automotive, energy).
  • Experience working with Chinese / Asian companies.
  • Legal right to work in Spain (AESC can support the work permit process), a driving licence and own vehicle, and availability to travel.

Led by a diverse and experienced management team, AESC employs more than 14,000 professionals worldwide. The company combines state‑of‑the‑art technology, Japanese craftsmanship and a strong track record in safety to deliver advanced battery solutions.
