Springer Nature is seeking a Development Editor in Madrid, operating within the Publishing Content Development team. You will manage content development from initial author brief to publication, ensuring quality and alignment with the publishing vision, and collaborating with multiple teams to deliver on time and within budget.

The role involves liaising with commissioning editors, authors and internal teams to maintain market relevance, schedule, and budget while supporting a range of ELT/TEFL

About the Role

Working within the Publishing Content Development team, the Development Editor has day-to-day responsibility for content development, from initial authoring brief to publication, ensuring that all material is of appropriate quality and fully aligned to the publishing vision of the Senior Commissioning Editor / Commissioning Editor and Publisher. The Development Editor may also commission ancillary items under the guidance of the Commissioning or Senior Development Editor. The role involves extensive cross-functional liaison with the Publishing, Design and Media, and Delivery teams to create material which meets the needs of key audiences and is published on schedule and within budget.

Role Responsibilities

• Work with the Commissioning Editor and/or Senior Development Editor to prepare author briefs for specific projects, informed by market intelligence and an understanding of target audiences and market needs.
• Support the identification of potential authors and contributors, using editorial judgement to identify appropriate expertise and perspectives.
• Understand budget and contract terms for external contributors, and create contracts with support from the Engagement Coordinator, ensuring correct procedures are followed and managing the complexities of multiple projects and stakeholder requirements.
• Work with authors and editors to provide constructive feedback and develop material that follows the brief, meets the required standard, is appropriate for the market, and is aligned with different output formats.
• Communicate effectively with contributors and maintain a customer-focused approach throughout the development process.
• Alert the project team to content development issues, collaborating with colleagues to resolve challenges and ensure delivery is on time and within budget.
• Understand the budgeting process and financial implications of making changes, working collaboratively with colleagues to support effective project decisions.
• Attend audio recordings, video/photo shoots and photo selection meetings to ensure output adheres to the brief and project specifications, applying knowledge of publishing workflows and systems.
• Create specification briefs for artwork, design and digital, as well as style sheets, page plans and asset briefs, using creativity and innovative approaches to develop engaging content across formats.
• Support the copy-editing process, including script, answer key and image brief extractions, applying editorial skills and knowledge of publishing workflows and systems to ensure accuracy and consistency.
• Deal with overmatter (print and digital), assessing issues, providing appropriate feedback and managing competing content requirements across formats.
• Understand the processes involved in rights clearance and collaborate effectively with relevant teams to ensure requirements are met within the publishing workflow.

• Educated to degree level or equivalent.
• Formal ELT / TEFL qualification.
• Demonstrable ELT / EFL teaching experience.
